SMU by far should not have been included. They are the glaring wart on the nose of the playoff.

IMO, Clemson and Indiana shouldn’t have been in either. Oh, Arizona State too.
That was pandering to the ACC for the rump pain they felt last year because of FSU............and they look like fools for the decision to put SMU in

This scenario would work. It would also do away with a playoff committee and make Notre Dame either join a conference or sit at home.
That would probably breathe new life into the Big 12 and ACC. I like it but there should be OBJECTIVE criteria that have to be met or you lose your spot and others like ND could be in. Maybe three spots guranteed for the big 2 conferences and two spots for the others. Wild card preference to those teams in major conferences or with comparable schedules. If you want in, schedule the games and win them.

Rhett Lashlee's take after the game today: "We didn't play well enough to say anything that isn't going to be written," Lashlee said. "It'll be written, should we be in or did we belong? That's fine. You're welcome to write it. We didn't play good today. But this is a quality team. We had a good team. We deserve to be here. We earned the right to be here. I'm disappointed we didn't play to the level that validates that."

There is never going to be a 100% foolproof way of determining who belongs and who doesn't. SMU clearly crapped the bed today and didn't do their argument any favors, but there is certainly an argument of why they belonged. As much as I want to say with certainty that Bama 100% belonged, I can also see JM having a day exactly like Jennings. It isn't like he didn't have some absolute clunkers this season. What I will say is that as a team, Bama is much better built to play in the playoffs than SMU was and it was less likely what happened to SMU or Indiana would happen to Bama (then I remember Oklahoma 🤦🏻‍♂️)

It is just about money. Been watching college football since the 1960s. There has never been a season where 12 teams had a legitimate shot at winning the championship, much less a team that ended the season ranked 17 (or wherever the Dabos and Smurfs were.)
Most years - even in the poll years - there were 2-3, MAYBE 4 teams you could look at and say, "Maybe the best team." A couple of times (1977, 1983), maybe 5 teams.

But since we got to the point where blockbuster games are played and the shrinking of conferences has consolidated the power enough to know the best teams, we've never had more than 3. But to make it fair, you have to have four teams in a short playoff.

This is a travesty and just wait - the solution is going to be.......add more teams!!!

Or it will be, "good-bye to everyone but the SEC and B1G."
