My memory is not that good but I'm thinking it was against LSU but not sure. Maybe someone remembers the player (Alexander?) the opponent and the year.

Did Curtis Alexander hold the record before Shaun broke it?

I doubt it, although I have seen Curtis Alexander mistakenly listed as the record holder for the '96 LSU game when it was actually Shaun Alexander.

The record was held by Bobby Humphrey at 284 yards off of 30 attempts during the 1986 Miss State game.

Shaun Alexander did it off 20 attempts.

Pulled out that old media guide!

Before Bobby broke it Bobby Marlow held it at 233 yards for the 1951 Auburn game off 25 attepmts!

FYI Bobby Humphrey had 4 games over 200 yards, Shaun 3, Harry Gilmer, Marlow, Gilmer, Musso, and Siran Stacy each had 1.

That was the last year my buddy and I had LSU season tickets. I bought them so I could at least see Bama every other year. I was in the southeast corner of the stadium, where the Tide came out of the locker room, and got to see Shaun come galloping up the east sideline toward us. A thing of beauty it was.

That was the game, I think, where Herb Tyler got hurt after running for his life most of the first half. Had some LSU friends who said if Herb hadn't got hurt, it would have been a different ball game. Yeah. Right.

Jug, my handbook says 217 yards but I don't know the number of carries. Are you and your family vacationing in Gulf Shores this summer? If so, would like to meet you and buy you a "cold one." I also have you a little gift from Tidefans for being voted Rival Poster of the Year. Please email me at bamajack@mchsi.com. Many thanks for your great posts, it's posters like you that have made this great site.

I remember that game well. Shaun didnt get his first carry till late in the 2nd quarter which was a 17 yard TD run. As smart as stallings was i remember after shaun scored that TD Gene still put Riddle back in at RB! Then the next drive which was in the second half, shaun carried once for a few yards then he busted like a 74 yarder then his next carry was a 76 yarder. He capped off his hoss daddy performance late in the 4th quarter with a 20 yarder i believe. Finished with 4 TDs and 291 rushing yards which about 274 of those yards came in the second half alone.
