I feel sorry for him. Maybe I shouldn't. But, it's obvious he feels he needs to do and say all this nonsense for motivation.
I hear athletes all the time say "Nobody believed in me, everybody said I couldn't do it ... I’ve been doubted my whole life… blah blah blah."
If that is actually true and the negative netties are truly people who are “close” to the athlete, those people are dumber than dirt and, IMHO,
evil for saying stuff like that to a kid growing up who wants to do great things. Can't even imagine saying that to a kid trying to do something hard.
However, that's MUCH different than being realistic about goal setting, being real on what it might take, the odds against, etc. I'm pro being real but encouraging. "Hey, if you want to try to achieve xyz, then here's what I think it will take. That means you need to do abc every day for the next 10 years to have a chance. I'll be there with yoiu supporting that effort but to get there, you have to actually do the work, yada yada." vs "Yo kid, you aint never gonna be nuthin. Why you think you special? blah blah".
HOWEVER, If he's referring to the internet and talking heads, then he needs to get over it... or use it as motivation as needed.
I saw someone refer to his stupid statement as "he's a kid give him a break" ... News alert: Pavia isn't a kid and normal heisman runners up don't post "XXXX you heisman voters" He deserves all the criticism we can throw his way. He's acted like a punk since he came on the scene. THAT IS WHO HE IS. Let's treat him like the punk he is.
