It seems to me the media is infatuated with Miss State every year. However, his record against the SEC West is 2-10. Both of those wins are against Ole Sis.

Well, it appeared they were on their way, with how they finished the season last year. They very nearly beat Arkansas, then they killed Michigan in the bowl game. But the sad fact for them was, Michigan stunk. Michigan would be at Vanderbilt's level in the SEC right now... let that sink in.

They are still way too weak on the lines to run with the big boys, and Relf just isn't an elite enough QB to overcome that.

I think Mullen's love affair with Mullen is waning. He is not a happy camper...

That being said, I still think he's a good coach. Name me one coach who's had great success at Mississippi St...

Oh I'll wait.......

Well to me its because how he's improved the level of play for them. To say they haven't drastically improved would be childish at best. They have a better offense, they're defense hits hard and is very aggressive. They're putting better athletes (with size and speed) on the field. So in seeing all of this it is very easy to see how analysts are taking that next progression with this team and saying they are an "up and coming" team.

Mullen is discovering why State is a coaches graveyard. He's never going to have the athletes that he enjoyed being around at Florida.

I dont think there is a whole lot of love just people complementing how well he has done. May not have the wins in the west yet but he has greatly improved the team in every department.

Jackie Sherrell?

They routinely whipped our butts when he was there, or they would give us fits. Some of the toughest games on the schedule back then were the MSU games. Of course they were cheating while they did it. But I don't remember the details of their probation.

If I were an MSU fan, I would be very angry at Mullen for giving up at the end of the game. They got the ball back with just under 3 minutes, down by 13 and all 3 timeouts. They ran plays up the middle of the field with no urgency and didn't burn a single timeout. I thought it was a complete cop out and I would've had bad feelings toward Saban if he'd done the same thing...(of course, he wouldn't have done that).

I'll have to give State a pass since the offensive line was decimated by injury last night. They have improved, but it's not showing up much on the SEC west scoreboard. About the only good years was the Jackie Era and that ended in probation. Just like the best years at TAMU were under Jackie and they ended in probation. I watched Tyler Russell destroy South Panola for the state title a few years ago and thought he would make a great college QB, but it hasn't happened yet.

Mullen's done really well with the level of talent he has. Let's face it, he's not coaching the players that Bama and the Who's have. Even R-Kansas is in better shape talent wise.

He held lsu to under 10 pts ( i think) up to the end of the 4th Q.

Impressive.

I think at this point he's done a good job, I think the long term verdict is obviously still out. He is starting to annoy me though. Whines too much. But I guess that's unavoidable being as he was Urby's right hand man for so long.

The past 2 games I have watched him scream at the refs for calling unsportmanlike conduct calls against his players. Some of these were very obvious. At this point you would think he would be yelling at the player not the refs. He needs to stop yelling at the refs so much and get control of the players and their actions.

I'm not sure how high Mullen can take the dawgs program. I think he will struggle to continue to increase the talent at State. Granted, he's already greatly improved it but I question if he can continue the upgrade to a higher level.
This exactly. People are heaping praise on him because State isn't as bad as they could be. Alabama andother programs aren't as successful in raiding Mississippi for talent as in the past and the Dawgs can pound weaker opponents into the turf and so far have hung in with the 2 "big boys" on their schedule. What was the final point spread in the Oregon v. LSU game again?

Mullen has probably taken MSU about as far as he can. They are what they are "Mississippi State". They are going to lose 3-4 games every year. They are not and will not win consistently as Bama, LSU, Auburn, and Arkansas do. They just do not have the resources to do it consistently. Mulen will leave as soon as an upper tier program calls him, whether that be in the SEC or another conference. MSU has done their best work in the past when they capitalized on other programs instability. Sherrill has his best run in the mid to late 90's when Bama was in turmoil under Dubose, Auburn under Bowden, and LSU under Dinardo. With all the problems at the other schools, they still only won the SEC West title in 1998. There is now stability and strong head coaches at Bama, AU, LSU, and Arky. Mullen will soon discover and may have already discovered that things will never get to the level he wants at MSU until things change at the other schools.
