Why didn't we blitz?

Why didn't we blitz more? Our front four was not getting any pressure on Russell and our secondary can only cover for so long. We got eaten up the whole second half on broken plays or plays Russell had 5 seconds to throw. Why wouldn't we blitz on 3rd down on the last play? I love Joe Kines and I'm sure he knows something I don't, but still.

It WAS kind of a MYSTERY, wasn't it! I couldn't figure out why we were playing what looked like a version of a prevent, which I didn't understand in the OT situation, being on the 25 yd line and in, but maybe the staff saw something!

Ah, the beginnig of the dreaded "Fire Joe Kines" thread!

We didn't blitz because:

1. JaMarcus Russell is very athletic and a "ton" to bring down. He makes things happen when he scrambles.

2. LSU has very fast, athletic receivers. And See number 1.

3. When we did blitz tonight, we weren't that successful.

I have to disagree with you there. We might not have got a sack but we made him throw a few bad throws.

For what ever reason we dont seem to blitz at that postion on the field. I can't recall us doing it all year.

Does it EVER EVER EVER EVER occur to fans that the reason that we do or DON'T do something is becasue it was tried & tried : again & again at practices & couldnt' be done by the personnel involved??????? Or that the opposition would smatter us to bits if we did?!? There is a REASON why we do or DONT do everything that happens out there & these coaches know a HECK of a lot that we DONT know....MOVE ON PLEASE! Let's just work at getting them motivated to play hard & good next weekend!!!! PLEASE!!!!

Held LSU to 10

Didn't need to blitz, because, believe it or not, not blitzing worked. If we would have had one scrap of offense in the second half, we win!! Really, a horrible second half performance by our offense. Defense was fine, and how about T Jones playing great in relief.

Actually we did blitz alot in this game. More so than any other game previously. We played a lot of Man cover and try to rattle Russell out of the pocket. I'm not sure why this is even being brought up.

Terrence Jones should have been playing the whole game. What a difference maker he would have been.

He came in theer with fresh legs and made some things happen thats for sure. I'm sure glad that he'll be there in 06 to help replace Ryans. I think TJ will be alright.

Yes. LSU's line picked up several of our blitzes. We have to realize that our line was suppose to be weak this year, plus Brodie does not step outside the pocket and does not move well from the outside pressure. Russel moved away from the pocket and the blocking held on the outside for lsu, allowing the recivers to run pass patterns that covered the whole field. What I mean by that is, they ran drag patterns in which Russel could step outside and catch the reciver coming across field. That is how you beat a fast defense. We do not have that capability in a drop back passer only. That makes our offense deliberate in certain yardage sitiuations. We need to open it up some and go with a Jimmy Johns type QB. The straight drop back passing is just waiting for teams to go blitz crazy on us. Roll Tide

You're exactly right! Sorry it's too late ( not really!! )
Geaux Tigers!!!

as far as i am concerned getting to the qb and making the sack is the complete purpose of a blitz, if you can rush a qb, especially one like russell, that is not a mobile one, and is not that accurate on the run, is the purpose of the blitz, and when we did blitz, yes, he completed a few short ones to the side line. but, the key, is standing in the middle of the field 3d and 6, and having all day to survey the field is a defenses worst nightmare, and we had one defensive back in area of the pass, our linebackers were no where near the middle of the field. he is 6ft 5inches tall, great vision standing straight up and not moving. easy toss for the win. get him out of the pocket any way you can. if you watched the auburn vs ga game the same thing they let brandon cox beat them 4th 15 no blitz, down to the ga 3 yard line. that tells it all.

Would you feel any better

if we had blitzed on the last play, not gotten to Russell, and he had completed the pass to a wide open receiver? Yes, it's possible that we would have sacked Russell and brought up 4th down, but that came fairly close to happening anyway with Jeremy Clark.

According to the paper this morning, Peprah said he had his hand on the ball but he could not rake it out of Bowe's hands. Game over LSU. I don't know how it could be much closer than that. Show class and tip your hat to LSU for making more plays than we did and deserving to win the game - that's almost a direct quote from Wallace Gilberry in today's paper.

That said, this apparently pitiful defense and atrocious coaching staff, at least according to some posters, has this team with 4 top 100 high school recruits (I believe someone said LSU had 19 and USC and Texas have 50 or 60 between them) at 9-1. Also, we lost yesterday in overtime 16-13 to a team that talent-wise we probably should not have even been on the same field with. I think I'll keep this coaching staff.

That's not to say that there are no improvements to be made. We need some help on both lines of scrimmage, particularly OL, and it appears that is on the way. Coach Shula also, IMO, needs to work on not outsmarting himself as many playcallers try to do in my opinion. It's OK to want to diversify, but if something is working (like we were running the ball in the first half) keep doing it until the defense adjusts to stop it, in which case it will have to expose something else.

Now, let's go put a third loss on Auburn and send a message loud and clear about who is the boss of college football in this state. I'm sure they will be trying to do the same.

I thought we were very successful when we blitzed. I would like to see a stat on how many completions JR threw when we put pressure on him. I'm betting it was very few as compared to the completions when we didn't.

That being said, I am disappointed in the outcome of the game, but not the season. I went to school with Mike and think he is definitely the one for the job. I hope this entire staff stays together for many years and I am behind them 100%!!

Woulda, shoulda, coulda. It doesn't matter. Regardless of whether there was any blitzing going on or not, you cannot argue with the results. So the defense didn't pitch a shutout. So what? Yes, it was painful watching LSU go up and down the field like that in the 2nd half, and yes, the Tide benefitted from LSU's kicker having a bad day. But the bottom line is: Alabama's defense held LSU to 10 points in regulation. And they did so with little or any help from the offense, especially in the 2nd half. Anytime a defense holds a top-5 opponent to 10 points in regulation = a great day for the defense.

Dropped passes, overthrown balls, missed blocks and other offensive miscues lost that game, not the defense. I was at the game and therefore did not see any time of possession stats, but I would be willing to bet that LSU dominated that category. That wears down a defense, even one as well-conditioned as Alabama's, so sooner or later it gives up some points. Bama went to the well one too many times, and finally came up a bit short.

Kines used a similar gameplan to those of Philly and Tampa's "Vick Rules" defense that consistently give Vick fits.

* Pinch the DEs and make the DTs fill the run windows for the QB in the pocket. Practically, you force the QB to function exclusively in the pocket.

* The linebackers play a cautious depth zone and are aware to any movement the QB makes. If for some reason the QB moves outside, a linebacker should be sliding over forcing the QB to still think pass.

This defense forces the offense not to be about the QB's mobility whether it be on a bootleg pass or QB draw, and more about his ability to make throws from the pocket. Russell's athleticism was nullified, but he took charge and made a number of clutch throws throughout the game. Kines made great adjustments in the second half to nullify what Jimbo Fisher came out with from halftime, but the principle gameplan remained the same: don't let Russell break the game open with a bootleg pass or run.

Just my humble opinion

Great defensive game. They absolutely played it right and as mentioned several times before - held LSU to 10 points in regulation. Enough said. There will not be any second guessing from me.

As for the stats - First half, Tide ruled; second half, Tigers ruled.

We are 9-1, and incredibly close to being 10-0. What an awesome season from the players and coaches.

Roll Tide and Crush Auburn next week!!!!!!!!!!!!!
