Why the obsession

It's because France and Hollywood are all run by ---s. Duh.

Cancer is far to mundane as is heart disease. AIDS, with its stigma of homosexual references, is far more viable as a media source, and thus get a rise out of the squeaky wheels who are vastly outnumbered by the silent majorities.

Talk about common sense and you will be ridiculed as a simpleton. Scream about the anguish of Herpes or AIDS and you will be cherished as a savior.

Squeaky wheels. As simple as that.

Let me add that the idea of an International TAX will be avidly supported by me as soon as all of the nations we have aided repay their past and present debts to the United States of America, in full, and immediately. Additionally, they should say the Pledge of Allegiance at every public gathering and must fly the Stars and Stripes. Until all of the members of the United Nations agree to this, then I am afraid, I will not support this or any International TAX, nor will I support any company or government official that endorses or submits to said tax.

One faint flicker of hope: this is the first positive idea I've seen Chirac hatch. Until now I thought his whole approach to international affairs was one great gripe and one big whine. (Well, you could include the gurgle of stolen oil.)

Two years ago Chirac also raised the possibility of an international tax to help the fight against AIDS, but gave few details, while he has several times extolled the idea to help combat the negative effects of globalisation.

I suppose globalisation does seem negative to him. He and France's socialists have fought the idea of unlimited free trade, the only thing which will positively aid poor nations. France protects its farmers with tariffs and gate prices which shut out the produce of African and Middle Eastern Third World countries. Instead he would rather throw them a publicity sop, a tax to fight AIDS.
