I had always been under the impression that Wilbur Jackson was the first black player at the University of Alabama. However, this article states that John Mitchell, assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was. Which one is correct? I have a co-worker here who is a Pittsburgh fan and asked me about this. Thanks in advance.

The Basketball player was the 1st black athelete at the U of A. (And I can't remember his name...Choaches at Stillman now(?))

Right. Redwave, Wilbur was the first HS recruit signed. John transferred from jr. college & was the first to play.
That's correct John was playing JC in Az and Coach John McKay made the mistake of telling Coach Bryant they were going to offer him, the instant Coach Bryant got home he sent someone after him with a schollie and the rest is history, I'm sure CJM was a little more tight lipped about potential recruits afterwards.

Wendell Hudson (Bama 71-73) was Bama's first black athlete and is currently Bama's Assoc. AD for Men's and Women's Basketball.

Leon Douglas (Bama 73-76) coached at Stillman (04-06) before taking over at Tuskegee (06-present).
