Will there be a National Championship game for 2020?

I have not seen this discussed (maybe I missed it). Providing the season is not cancelled altogether and we have this mishmash season of some conferences playing and some not, how would this play out? If not, do we just have a conference championship game and leave it at that?

Thoughts....

Check out JessN's pinned article.

But to answer your question, with tongue in cheek, If the ACC and SEC play, just take their champions...Clemson and SECW winner and play the NC game.

OK, thanks. I overlooked Jess' take until now. Some discussion below his article. Lets expand on that here.
You actually are making my point with your tongue n cheek. So if only the ACC and the SEC survive. Could there actually be a defacto championship played between the two conferences? Would that be allowed by the NCAA? If not, can you imagine the speculation of who's the best?

I think it depends on how many P5 conferences choose to play - I think if 60% of the conferences / teams play, you'll have a championship. Less than that and there will be non-stop fighting forever about whether or not the NC 'counts'.

I suspect if the B12, ACC, and SEC try to play, and if they can keep the players and staff well, there will be a crowned NC.

If only the SEC plays, then the SEC Championship Game is the national title game. And that would be fine by many I believe :)

Imagine how cool that would be. One game. Two championships. Talk about unprecedented!

I might be confused but does the NCAA have any say in college football playoffs?

Not the same, but the NCAA pulled the plug on the FCS playoffs when the number of teams dropped below 50%.

But the NCAA doesn’t sponsor the championships at the FBS level. So who knows what will happen.

UMASS announced they aren’t playing this fall. So that makes 27 schools not playing this fall. Down to 103 left at FBS with no official word from the Big Ten.

Should be plenty of TV time for everyone this fall with fewer games being played.

IMO, until the PAC wins one they don't really matter, but if they and the B1G choose not to play, they remove themselves from contention and can't really complain.

Kinda like voting for the presidency. If you don't vote don't complain. In this case, if you don't play then accept the consequences.

Could the NCAA take a page from the golf handbook? Play a series of High -Level exhibition games instead of fully cancelling everything like Tiger & Phil w/ Peyton & TB...
Imagine this. Out of all conferences that are still agreeing to play...2-3 games a week:

Week 1:
Bama-Clemson
Georgia-Oklahoma...

Week 2:
LSU-Texas
Notre Dame-Florida...

Low number of games, less exposure for the players (medically) and EVERY game would be like a CFP atmosphere...it would be something and the ratings would set records...

OR....just have a top 20 tournament. 1-v-20, 2-v-19...play in a dome somewhere (Atlanta!)...win or go home...End w/ a NC!!!

Just a reach from a cat that really wants to see football...RTR...

Do we wait until after a spring season to decide who is #1.....with no Championship game?
If the SEC and the ACC play in the fall and the others play in the spring, there is a small chance that this goes back to the days the AP and the Coaches Polls get to make the decision of the 2020's final poll and thus who was the MNC.

Well, it won't be decided by a CFP (I don't guess) so there's always a one-year divergence. Hoped I'd never have to hear "mythical NC" again.

Pac 12 out too. The rest of the P5 just looked across the chess board at the SEC, ACC, and Big 12....
