Wishbone offense

I know the old wishbone is out of style except with the service academies, but could you imagine how hard Arkansas would be to defend if they ran it with McFadden, Jones, and Hillis at fullback. They don't have the quarterback for it right now. If Matt Jones and his speed were there still it would be hard to handle. Marcus Monk would be single-covered all the time. It would be similar to how hard Alabama was to defend in the 70's.

Athletic and fast defenses make the wishbone somewhat obsolete. Not entirely... a team like Arkansas could probably make a decent run with it... but ultimately it would be a bad idea, IMO.

interesting user name.

anyway some have speculated that they wouldn't be surprised to see Arkansas to run a spread option attack or something similar to it. We'll see.
They are working on something new on offense this week per Hog media. With Casey Dicks passing or lack of, I wouldn't be suprised to see the wishbone. Jones, Mcfadden and Hillis would be hard to handle.

I was born in Fort Worth and thats where I live now. My family is from Fort Worth on my mother's side. I moved to Enterprise when I was three years old in 1973, and lived there for 18 years. I grew up with the Bryant wishbone teams and my love for the Tide grew from there. I'm glad the first people we met there were Alabama fans. I grew up spoiled pulling for Alabama, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Enterprise Wildcats. Those teams didn't lose much when I was a kid.

It's interesting that the subject of 'bone has come up a couple of times on their boards...
.... and they've had 2 weeks to try and put a little polish on it if they did work on it any in August . Interesting . It would surprise me if we saw very much of it but , I would not be shocked at all if we saw a little bone mixed in . :p_blank:

The Hogs new O-cordinator (David Lee) spent 1994 thru 2001 at Rice. Just seems I remember Rice being a wishbone offense during those years. Does anyone remember?

There's tons of possibilities with a backfield as good as McFadden, Jones, and Hillis. I'm sure we'll see the Hogs throw everything and the kitchen sink at Bama's defense this week, but I'm also sure that CNS and Co. will have some new stuff to throw at them as well.

I don't see Arky running the bone. There's not much passing threat from the bone, particlarly with Dick at QB, Bama would crowd the line and keep their RB's from getting outside. They already play a power inside game and don't see a need to change that. However in the Red Zone it might catch us by surprise.

I actually think that it would help Dicks passing. The element of supprise with 9 defenders near the line might losen up some zones.

I believe they ran more of a flex-bone or wing/veer type as opposed to the actual bone . We shall soon see what's in store . I hope our guys are ready for some assignment football in it's purest form .

Well, it could actually be a combo wishbone/option attack... some have ventured that Robert Johnson may be back at QB running it also.

When recruited he was one of the best option/dual-threat QBs out of HS, but Nutt had other plans for RoJo.

I personally love the wishbone offense. And while i know that with today's superfast defenses, it probably wouldn't be nearly as sucessful as it was in the 70's, i would love to see CNS put it in at some point during his tenure at Bama. Not as a primary offense, nor as a trick play package, but just for the pure enjoyment to thousands of Bama fans who remember the days when the wishbone was our "bread and butter".

Well alot of Hog fans have been predicting that this year Arkansas would become a predominate option team with the additions of

David Lee (offensive coordinator)-option guy throughout his college career

and

Tim Horton (running backs coach)-came from option heavy Air Force

Whether it will be run in the wishbone, spread, or wing we don't know yet.

Offenses run in cycles and the 'bone's basically run its out. It's a good offense still for the academies, with their light weight OLs and good all-round athletes. Also, it's worth a game a year, because of the novelty factor. The bone didn't wither because of faster defensive players. After all, the offensive players have also grown faster. It's demise was caused by DCs figuring out that they could dictate who carried the ball. And, it's hard to play catch-up when you have to. Also, despite some success by Bama, it's hard to pass effectively out of it. These are the reasons that, when you see an option attack these days, it's out of the spread, etc.
