Thanks Stan, I too remember Jack Mildren. IMO he and the first Wishbone QB, James Street from Texas were the best. Mildren was the QB in the then "game of the century" against Nebraska but lost 35-31. That same Nebraska team destroyed Alabama 38-6 in the Orange Bowl. He was a good 'un.

Thanks "D"man, it was a thing of beauty! To this day I haven't seen a better team than 71 Nebraska. The Sooners took them to the wire in a, [ pardon the phrase] game for the ages. The Huskers destroyed a very good Alabama team in the Orange Bowl and the Sooners dismantled a potent Auburn squad. I would love to see either team from that year compete today. I know things have changed in the game but those two teams were scary!

I agree about the '71 Nebraska team, but I am sure you will get some argument. The 1971 Alabama team may have been one of Coach Bryant's best and they just completely dominated us in every category you can think of. I have followed Alabama football for a long time and do not recall us taking such a physical pounding and we were either #2 or #3 in the nation at that time. It is hard to compare teams from different eras, but my vote would go to that 1971 Nebraska team.

I have always held the referees responsible for the loss in the Orange Bowl to the '71 Nebraska team. They blew the whistle for the opening kickoff and that was all the help Nebraska needed. 38-6 and it wasn't that close. They were #1going into the game and we were #2 but after the game there was no doubt who was #1 that year. I gained a lot of additional respect for the Nebraska program after that game. They were just as gracious after winning as they were after we waxed them pretty good in the '65 and '66 games.
I hate to admit it but I knew we were in trouble after Oklahoma hammered aubrun ealier in the day in their bowl game. Jack Mildren made it look easy.

He and Gregg Pruitt ran through us like a hot knife through butter in the Bluebonnet Bowl. We went to the 'bone the next year.

They ran through us pretty well in the 1st half......however we held them to a field goal in the 2nd half and missed a field goal of our own at the end that would have won the game.

Jack Mildren was, perhaps, the best 'bone qb of all time. Why? Not only could he execute the triple option, but he could drop back and pass as well with a high degree of efficiency. Steadman Shealy and Jeff Rutledge were very similar in style and ability, but Jack was the best of all of them imo....
