Here's a SI flashback from a January 14th 1980 issue.

I really loved this paragraph -

"But what truly crushed Arkansas was the performance of Don McNeal, Byron Braggs, E.J. Junior and the rest of Alabama's splendid defense, which had given up an average of just five points per game in 1979. Although the Razorbacks' Kevin Scanlon did complete 22 of 39 passes, he said later that he was left on his feet after only two of those throws. Arkansas Coach Lou Holtz summed the day up best when he said, "Alabama's offense is fourth best in the nation, and it's the team's major weakness."

Now those are memories that the younger generation of Tide fans need to be schooled on.

Those were some great times for Alabama.
The rules are different, but the game is the same.
You had to work harder than the other guy to win then, and the same is true now.
Money is a bigger part of the equation, but that doesn't change the fact that the game is won on the field of play by only the players willing to take the field to win.

And a 'pass' from the NCAA helps some schools, too.

Ahh yes, I remember that well living in Arkansas with all the folks so enamored with Holtz. They just could not believe they were so outmatched by Bama.

I remember Coach Holtz in a press conference before the game:

He was asked "What teams would be the best teams to play in a bowl?

Holtz answered. "Alabama's offense playing Alabama defense."
