Losing home opener to SLU... WOW just WOW

All the talk about how I've been around long enough to know this is a top 20 ball club... I'd have more sympathy if they didn't blow smoke up our tails

No excuses.... Still can't believe Phillips is still around

I had now way to follow the game but it certainly seems the pitching was good. We need to get the sticks going in the next two and take the series. How many hits did we have tonight and how may left on base?

First game but looks just like last year- good pitching and no offense. St. Louis line up included 7 freshman and 2 sophomores. Hope that is not a sign of things to come. But it is hard to expect much from Gaspard. One extra base hit tonight. Wow is right.

can't blame the pitching for this one.

What the hell was Mitch thinking putting Blanchard in the leadoff spot? He's probably the worst player to ever wear an Alabama uniform. Maybe worse than the Tullidges

SLU is expected to be a good team this year. They have potential to be a top 25 club themselves. We didn't lose to a bunch of chumps laat night. Time will tell about both teams. Its really early and we did have a chance to tie. Andy can't be blamed for everything people. Its a dead horse, please quit kicking it. For those of us who follow Bama Baseball and don't take loses personally, we do get tired of the coach bashing and there are forum rules I might add.....if this turns into a flop, I will agree that a change needs to be made but at this point I am not sure anyone expected us to go undefeated.

Back away from the ledge and lets see what happens ok guys!!!

Yep. Only 1st game of season. Hitting is my main concern; we haven't done much of it in last few years. I was disappointed in the lineup card with Blanchard leading off. Early in the game, we had a couple of runners on and 2 out, and the lineup turned over. Had Salem been at leadoff, we might've had a chance to score.

Simply saying to lose at home to SLU is more of the same. All the talk about progress, etc.... We haven't made any, we are the same club we had last yr one year older.

We got 1 run vs SLU, although they may not be chumps, I'm certain well see better throughout the season.

What gets me is for 3 weeks all we've heard about is how good this team is, how improved everyone is, how this team is hungry to take the next step..... Opening day was more of the same, same faces, same results

It goes back to 2 things:
1) poor recruiting
2) Phillips being hired, no way he should have been allowed to be hired by the powers that be. If he were to be let go today, he'd struggle to get a job coaching at this level

Game 2, and it's not 0-5 Blanchard who gets benched, it's the freshman draft pick who showed real promise during intrasquad

at least he got put in the 8 hole, which is where he would be if any Division III school had recruited him

I like the clutch-hitting from Wass. We need that. Also extra base hits today. Homer by Cucjen, triple by White, and double from Wass. And of course, great pitching after 1st by Kamplain, Eichholz, and Burrows.

Recruiting...Can't say I agree with that. Pitching, the hardest to recruit, has been good and is getting better it appears. We have a team USA member at SS, and a possible all-sec second baseman, CF, and RF. That isn't bad for any team.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see the offense of the late 90's but no one has those anymore because the game has changed. It is a pitching and defense based game except for the teams that play on cracker jack fields. I'm not saying Philips or any of our coaching staff is the best there is out there, but they could be a lot worse. Lets face it, until we have facilities that rival those of upper echelon teams, you are gonna be able to do so much. We are getting there with upgrades to the park and that should allow us to recruit even better. We have some bright days ahead of us guys, just let them get here!

Recruiting is a major issue. This states best talents doesn't end up at Alabama. More than a few bama boys ended up in Omaha with mississippi state.

We went through a period of every tuscaloosa kid on the roster and there are still signs of this.

And I 100% disagree about pitching being the hardest to recruit.

Facilities do matter, but Vandy whose facilities are way worse than ours seems to do okay recruiting wise. Put a winner on the field they will come. We haven't done that. We are happy wining 35 games and being a 2 seed in the regionals. We think its okay to .ose to SLU on opening weekend. The standards are too low. There was a time this was unacceptable to everyone and its time it gets back that way.

Sounds like Wass is going to be a good one.

Need someone to step up in LF and DH (guessing that will be Haynie). Never would have thought Cucjen would be the first one to hit a HR this year, but if he can add some offense with a good glove, that's even better.

The reason I say pitching is the hardest to recruit is when you work a kid to sign with you for a couple years then the draft comes around and he is drafted many take it. The draft for years centered around high school kids and it depleted many schools of talent. Bama being one of them imo. Now pro teams have wised up an are going more for college kids that have proven themselves allowing more colleges to get and develop kids. I think we are doing that with this staff, unlike Wells who used 6 pitchers and that was it. Offensively, a kid can either hit or he can't. There are lots of kids on the high school level that hit for high average, say .350 or higher, but it is more of a product of weaker competition. Easy way to seperate the kids that can hit from those that can't is to see them against top flight pitching. Recruiting itself is inherently hard and much of it has to do with the mlb draft taking so many players. Just my imo, and we can agree to disagree.

What position do you think is the hardest?
