Chad Bumphis has narrowed his decision down to two schools: Alabama and Mississippi State. By virtue of doing so, he eliminated Florida, Tennessee, and LSU, among others.

Bumphis said he will take an official visit to Alabama on January 9th, and then take one to Mississippi State shortly thereafter. He wants to make a decision ASAP and get the process over with, so we should know shortly after the MSU visit.

I have a feeling that if Momma is okay with him leaving the state, then he will be Bama bound. Even with that thought, Bama isn't far from Miss State anyway. I hope we get this kid, Saban has been on a run in the past few days.

I saw my Uncle over the Thanksgiving holidays (he's a coach at Tupelo) and he said Bumphis honestly doesn't know where he's going at this point. I need to talk to him again, because obviously, a lot has changed just since late November, but he sees him every day and talks to him on a pretty consistent basis about it.

At least he's narrowed it down to two though, I'd feel a lot better if Croom were still there. Mullen is going to need some playmakers and Bumphis fits the mold. Thanks for the update.

I hate to say it, but I think we lose this one. Mullen will sell him on MSU because of the O they are going to run, a wr will get a lot more touches in his offense than in our more conservative, run-leaning offense.

CB also mentioned that he and Coach Mullen have a good relationship dating back when Mullen was at Florida when the gators were trying to recruit him.

IMO, Bumphis stays home. he has a very good chance to be playing early and making an immediate impact.

I agree.. If Sly were still the coach at MSU, I'd say Chad was a Bama lock. But with Mullen at State, I think Chad stays instate. JMO of course.

It sounds like you may be right.

I read a premium article today where Bumphis' high school coach said Mullen was trying to sell him on the idea of using him the way Florida uses Harvin.

His high school coach does say Bumphis will choose between Alabama and Mississippi State, but thinks State has the edge right now.

It doesn't look good, for Bama, since he dropped UF from his list after Mullen was hired at MSU. I'm sure Mullen's flashy offense looks good to him but you don't successfully install that type offense overnight. Bumphis may be ready to leave before they can open up the MSU offense like Mullen wants to.
I hope Chad can realize that Bama hasn't used 1/3 of Coach Mac's play book and the Bama offense will open up considerably with the QB's and skill athletes we have coming in and waiting in the wings. CNS will always want smash mouth football but he also wants to run more bubble screens and flare passes.

Regarding MSU, the reason he liked UF had a lot to do with Mullen. I think he will likely stay in state... but don't sell CNS short on this one because we also can offer immediate playing time to a kid coming in ready to play the slot.

I agree that MSU probably has the edge because Bumphis just fits better in a Mullen-style offense. However, we need an athlete of his caliber in the slot…so I think we’ll continue going after him hard. He’s a very exciting athlete to watch with the ball in his hands.

My guess is he winds up at MSU…which means we still need a slot WR in this class. Especially with Teague seeming to favor FL (may even be a silent commitment). Teague mentioned that CNS hinted that he could be a candidate to feature in a “Wildcat” type of formation if we decided to run it.

It would be huge if we could get RR to be a part of this class.

He mentioned that to Teague.

The selling point with Mullen is the Harvin route....touches, touches, touches.

I'm really holding out hope for Bumphis. He's the most impressive of the Mississippi WR prospects to me. Plus, he can play the slot. I like Patterson and Norwood, but I think Bumphis fits our needs better, with Bowman on board, and Randle and Kelly still likely.

Bumphis is great and would love to have him but in my opinion Norwood is the best out of the group. And I know how much we are emphasizing the slot receiver but truth is if we can get more outside receiver types like Bowman, Norwood, Randle, and maybe Kelly then guys like Maze and Hanks can focus on playing only the slot and that would greatly help us. In the end I think we aren't necessarily holding a spot for a slot receiver we just want the best receivers that we can get and Bumphis is definitely up there. But our staff has been high all along on Norwood and it has even been specualted that behind Randle he is #1 on our board. Not to mention what a QB with better field vision and ball distribution will do for our offense.

I agree that Norwood is the best MS wide receiver out there, of the group of Norwood, Bumphis, and Patterson. Saban and company concur as well.

However, with that said, I don't think we'll get Bumphis. I believe we would have had Croom stayed in Starkville, but Mullen getting the job makes State the perfect fit. He is a great fit for the Florida offense, and was strongly considering them, but they were just too far away. And now he can essentially play in the Florida offense by going to MSU.

All in all, I think all of the stars have just aligned for Bumphis to go to State. I imagine he will give us very serious consideration, but ultimately he'll pick the Bullies.

Either way, it'll work out well enough for us. We'll get Kendall Kelly if Bumphis goes to State, and we might even pull the ultimate coup with Rueben Randle. One way or the other, we're not going to be lacking for quality receivers in the near future.

I don't feel very good about our chances of landing Bumphis at this point. Like you, I think Bumphis would have signed with Alabama if Croom were still at Mississippi State. I think landing Bumphis is very important to Mullen and I've just got this feeling that he will get him.

Patterson official visits to Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Auburn and Tennessee in January and says that Ole Miss stands out.

Scheduled his last official with UT the weekend of January 30th. Receivers Marlon Brown and James Green are also scheduled at UT that weekend.

IMO, Mullen is growing on Bumphis and MsSt should not to be discounted for his services.
