As most of you should know, the words to Yea Alabama and what are actually sung are two different things. The song begins with...

"Yea Alabama, drown 'em Tide", however, most people sing it "Yea Alabama, Crimson Tide", which is wrong. However, even if you download and listen to the version on the U of A web site(http://www.rolltide.com/livestats/music/Yea%20Alabama.mp3) you will clearly hear the words incorrectly spoken. This version is rather long because it goes through the entire song without lyrics first.

Anyway, I'd like somebody to explain why there is this mistake?

When singing along at games, I always say "Drown 'em Tide". However, my older sister told me that the words had been changed at sometime to say "Crimson Tide". So, from my understanding, "Drown 'em Tide" is the original and "Crimson Tide" is the revised. She didn't give me an explanation or a date of the change. But this would explain why the official version from The University's website has the latter lyrics. I still sing "Drown 'em" at the games, but I'm an old school kinda guy.

I started at the university in fall of '87. In one of the orientation books with the words to the fight song they had "Crimson Tide". Not sure how long before that the change was but it has been at least 17 years.

I think they also should re-write the parts about "Send the Chellow Yackets to a watery grave" and the part about "remember the Rose Bowl, we'll win.....etc". We've had zero affiliation with either in many many moons....

Spot, I couldn't agree more, but I am a realist and know that they will not change those lyrics!

As I mentioned however, the actual lyrics on all web site information as well as in all programs has "Drown 'em Tide", but when it is played on recordings the singers say "Crimson Tide".

I was in school 1980 to 1984 and I never once saw or heard them use the term "Crimson Tide".

Oh well, I've written the University and will hopefully get information back from them.

Thanks gang!

Then maybe we can come up with a total re-do on the lyrics.

Just for fun, maybe someone gifted in writing lyrics would like to take a shot at some new words, keeping the tune.

Let's have a contest.

Anybody?

Here's a shot. Bare with me on puntucation and spelling, I'm going from memory.

Yea, Alabama! Crimson Tide.
Every Bama mans behind you, hit your stride.
Go teach the buldogs to behave.
Send those tigers back into their cage.
And if a man's start to weaken, that's a shame.
'Cause Bama's pluck-n-grit has writ her name in Crimson fame.
So, fight on, fight on, fight on men.
Another championship we'll win.
So, roll on to victory, hit your stride.
You're Dixie's football pride, Crimson Tide.
ROLL TIDE! ROLL TIDE!

Just call me Eminem.

Another line that many people sing incorrectly is "Every bama man's behind you." Most people use the word "fan" instead of "man."

As a song writer, why in the world would you want to rewrite a song that stood the test of time as "Yea Alabama" has...I say tradition is grand..."remember the Rose Bowl...we'll win then!!

By the way. If the playoff ever happens, we will be back to the Rose Bowl for our next NC.

How did the last CD do Deacon/Spot?

As for the lyrics regarding the Yellow Jackets and the Rose Bowl, I like the song the way it is. First, I like the historical references. Second, although the Big Ten was locked in as a participating team for 50 years, Alabama has still been to and won more Rose Bowls than any Big Ten teams other than Michigan and Ohio St. That includes more than Indiana, Purdue, and Northwestern combined. Third, the "many moons" can be rectified by scheduling a home and home with Tech every so often and with the BCS in place Alabama can now go to the Rose Bowl once we get back to where we should be. Can I get any amens? RTR.

The University does NOT own the rights to Yea Alabama (which I think is a mistake). So, it won't be getting changed.

Our great Rose Bowl record played a HUGE role in BAMA establishing itself as one of the most elite programs in college football, we can't turn our backs on those great players who "writ her name in CRIMSON flame".

Revere and cherish the tradition, don't run from it.

Well as far as changing the lyrics, you just can't change history. That would be like changing the uniforms. And the lyrics are "drown 'em tide" not "crimson tide." I remember reading a program from a game, I can't remember which game. But in the front the lyrics said "crimson tide" but in the back they had fixed it and put in "drown em tide." In the back the program had said that the front was wrong and that the lyrics are supposed to say "drown em tide." At the games everyone gets it wrong, except in the student section.
