South Alabama LB in portal and appears Bama has offered (played for Womack). A little surprising considering LB depth.

We offered him.when he entered the portal in early spring after kane became our DC then he decided to stay at USA.
His tape is great and knows this defense.

I understand folks freaking out because they think we have a lot of linebackers. But it remains to be seen if we have the right linebackers for our new system moving forward and the portal remains open til Wednesday morning and there are a few names on that list that either by graduation draft or transfer portal will not be here in 2025 and maybe not 2024.

This was a HUGE factor in my decision to stop coaching little league BB & FB. The parent management facet pushed me away entirely.

PARENT: Why did you put my son in right field?
ME: Because this team doesn't pull the ball often and I need someone who can stop the ball and get it back in.
PARENT: Still mad and does what butt-hurt parents do in the stands and practice.

PARENT: The only reason you chose your kid as All-Star is you're the coach.
Me: Your kid hit .120 and doesn't field the ball very well.
PARENT: He'll probably quit because of this.

On and on, and on, and on,,,,,,,,,,
Parents that say this are usually parents that never play ball with their kids. My son was an All Star pitcher every year he played youth baseball. All throughout the year we were in the yard working on his pitching either pitching or doing things to improve his arm strength.

Not really sure I get pursuing another linebacker. We seem to have talent 3-4 deep in that group. I do understand that there's a lot of fluidity these days and things may not be as they seem.

Quandarrius Robinson – R-Sr.
Jihaad Campbell – Jr.
Jeremiah Alexander – R-So.
Deontae Lawson – Sr.
Justin Jefferson – Sr.
Keanu Koht – R-Jr.
Keon Keeley – R-Fr.
Yhonzae Pierre – R-Fr.
Cayden Jones – Fr.
Noah Carter – Fr.
Qua Russaw – R-Fr.
Jayshawn Ross – Fr.
QB Reese – Fr.
Sterling Dixon – Fr.
Justin Okoronkwo – Fr.

Only issue is 9 freshmen out of 15 guys. We seem to have that problem in several position groups. Perhaps a future with fewer freshmen signees and more experience from the transfer portal?

Starting to wonder how much this staff values spring practice since this guy opted not to come in January and we also have the Brailsford/Brockermeyer mystery.

Here's another theory about the center position: Brailsford was held out, mostly, to focus on the academic issues. The staff wanted to spend the entire spring evaluating other guys to see if they would be contributors, either long or short term. This was their first real chance to evaluate the guys they haven't coached before.
A few guys on this list are really defensive ends now and about half will be headed to the NFL/graduation/transfer portal before 2025 and the ones left over will have very little in game experience

It seems clear we need o-line depth and CB depth more than linebackers at this point.

I agree.

But here's the thing. What quality olinemen in the portal right now are happy to just be depth pieces? They are in the portal to play, they won't play here inside, and they probably won't beat out our tackles. Its whynthe portal really isn't great for depth. We might can add a guy who will just be depth but we may be talking folks off a cliff because he was a 2 star or he is sub 300 lbs.

DB will be solved pretty soon, things look good for woods and Khalil could play. situationally at the rover role.

He did not.

He said that guy was our top portal target (he was expected by multiple schools to leave toledo) but decided to stay and we went after amos instead.

Its been twisted that way by rival fans.
Lol maybe. Seemed awfully close to saying it though. He kinda stumbled over his words so hard to tell for sure IMO. Idk. I would not be surprised if we have tampered before

A couple of our LBs have had injury issues so some insurance would be good. Hopefully, will get another DB and quality O lineman.

That was always the tough part of the SAban system. not all LBs are the same. The profile for an inside guy (Mike/Will) is extremely different from an outside guy (Jack/Sam) so you have to look deeper than what is listed on the roster;

Jihaad Campbell – Jr. - ILB
Deontae Lawson – Sr. - ILB
Justin Jefferson – Sr. - ILB
Cayden Jones – Fr. - ILB
Sterling Dixon – Fr. - ILB
Justin Okoronkwo – Fr. - ILB

Jeremiah Alexander – R-So. Edge who only started trying to play ILB mid-season

QB Reese – Fr. - Probably ILB

Quandarrius Robinson – R-Sr. - Edge, but not really big enough for 3 downs
Keanu Koht – R-Jr. - Edge, but also not really big enough for 3 downs
Keon Keeley – R-Fr. - moved to DE
Yhonzae Pierre – R-Fr. - Edge, but not a prototype with height
Qua Russaw – R-Fr. - Edge, but not a prototype with height

Jayshawn Ross – Fr. - Edge,
Noah Carter – Fr. - Edge

So really, we lack experienced depth at ILB. I liked what I saw from the 3 TFs at aday, but who knows if that's their long term spot. Jones always looked more edge to me but he'd need to add mass. Alexander looked a lot like Shane Lee. I think he's got some work to do to get faster/ (likely smaller) and a bit more agile/mobile to be able to be a functional ILB.

We also don't have great fits for the small edge - and this would have been the case just as much with Sabans system as the new one. None of the guys are really in the mold of what that edge player prototype really is. I could also see Pierre and Russaw shifting inside due to lack of length. That might help out there some but then we'd be exposed at Edge, and honestly, I thought Russaw played better overall than any of the other small edge guys on aday with Pierre not far behind him. Love QRs story of coming back from the injury, but both he and Koht are really pass rush specialists and got exposed some against the run.

Ed Woods. Ton of upside there will probably start early but may give way to one of the younger guys later in the year....but almost exactly what we need and plays in a similar defense.
Chop, I really appreciate all your insight into recruiting and transfer portal developments. You’re definitely an asset to this board. RTR
