Did anyone else notice that Maze didn't have any catches recorded in the scrimmage stats from saturday?

I know a lot of folks elesewhere did, enough that a reporter asked him about it in an interview after yesterdays practice.

When asked if he had any, he kinda studdered and sayed uh, nah I mean yeah I guess the guys that keep up with that stuff just left it out, then kinda gave a deceptive grin, like he was chuckling to himself.

Combine that with Saban saying Maze has been a cosistent playmaker right after the scrimmage.

I know the stats released are what they want to release, not necessarily what happened. Makes you wonder if he showed out a bit and they didn't want anyone to know.

Anyway I found it interesting and thought I'd share, the vid of the interview is on tidesports. I'd link it but I'm on my phone and it would be a pain.

FWIW, I heard he had a big end around play that wasn't in the stats as a rush. I'm sure some of the unreleased passes went to the backs, but i wouldn't doubt that some went to Maze and Peek.

I really hope his route running has improved and he starts making all the routine catches this year. I think he could be a star for the Tide. He made a couple or three spectacular catches last year that made me go "wow" out loud.

One in particular comes to mind..I don't remember the game...but it was a catch he made on what turned out to be a dead ball penalty play, that was unbelievable.

Oooo, thanks tide-hsv, didn't notice that. What about Peek, I don't seem to remember him having any reported either.

I believe it was in the Clemson game. One handed diving catch. Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I hope he steps up too, along with the other WRs.

good thread topic, NAT. What is his 40 time? Is he the fastest player on the team?

Going by his old rivals profile, he runs a 4.4. I'd say that's pretty close to accurate. Not sure if he is the fastest on the team with Bell and some others. But he is definitely up there.

And to the other poster, I believe it was the Clemson game that he caught the one handed circus catch as well. JPW overthrew him a bit, but he managed to bring it down. JPW overthrew him a couple of times last season for what would have been big plays. I think he will end up being another Prothro type player if he keeps at it.

I'm not sure if he's the fastest, but he's gotta be right there at the top. Based on his prep film, Kenny Bell looks like he'd be one of the fastest on the team. Corey Grant (obviously not on the team yet) is likely faster than anyone on the team over 100 meters (I think he's run around a 10.5, electronically timed), and may be fastest over 40 yards, too.

If I had to guess, I'd say Maze could crack 4.4, but I haven't seen any actual 40 time on him.

We don't really know how the team stacks up with the new guys added. Bell has a pretty bad case of shin splints right now, so he ain't as fast as he was, at least for a while...

I'm a little concerned as to just how fully recovered Peek is . There have been some mumurs that he may not be quite back up to speed yet .

I've been thinking the same thing with the way the staff has been treating him. Seems like there might me more concerns there than we are hearing in the public.

Maybe Earle can collaborate this but I've always been told/heard that Terry Grant is the fastest on the team.

Probably true once, if not now, but the best thing about our direction these days is...there's always a bigger, stronger, faster athlete coming up the pike every year. I'm sure it's a strong competition whoever it is.

I heard both Maze and Grant at various times last season. The fact of the matter is that there's just not much difference between them, speedwise. Both can be potent weapons, if you can get them in space. It's just not fair to run TG between the tackles, as we were forced to do.

Good points. Saban has praised Grant's work in fall camp, so I expect to see him back in the mix.

CNS invested a lot of time and energy into persuading him to stick around. He certainly doesn't do that with all of them. I'm assuming that wasn't just to sit him...
