Aubies looked pretty good tonight

I watched much of the Albarn MSU game tonight and Auburn looked pretty good. MSU certainly is not very good but I think they are better than last year.

The Aubies offense looked smooth most of the night and the little tailback, can't remember his name, is as quick as a cat. Their D looked strong but made crucial mistakes to help MSU keep drives alive several times. The spread they ran has a bunch of misdirection in it and the cameraman lost the ballcarrier on several ocassions. QB looked good, Tate looked good.

Who knows what the season will hold but I think they win a few games.

with their high school preseason schedule i've said from day one they will be 4-0 going into Knoxville.

Let's face it--its conceivable that they could be 5-0 going to Arkansas without having played anybody. Let's see what Mr. "5-19" can do against real competition after that, then we will have an idea of how good the barn really is...

I'll agree that auburn is much improved this year. Gotta wonder though, how will their depth hold up as the season goes on? Also, no one really knew what to expect out of them offensively. What happens when opposing teams have several game tapes to look at in preparing for them?

I'm not sure that a month of easy games will help the barn improve. I guess it will help their confidence to some degree, but I wouldn't be overly confident after beating teams like Auburn's first 4 opponents.

We'll see...

Yeah, they did.

But who cares? They are Auburn. We are Alabama. We are in the title hunt...they, well, unless a miracle happens...aren't. I don't want their little trolls to come over here, read this thread, and be able to say"whoo! The bamars (sp?) are scared".

Without Malzahn it wouldn't be nearly so pretty. He was the best hire of their off-season. Should have just made him headcoach and left Chizik to rot somewhere. He'll be a head coach somewhere next season.

I agree...I only watched that game briefly, but Todd looked like a different qb improved from last year, making better decisions, not tentative. Their schedule is on their side, but imo their depth will become an issue down the stretch. We've been there, and its toughest in close games as the season wears on.
MissSt is still...well MissSt. Really can't say how good/bad the barn is until they face a quality team. But they did look improved imo based on what little I've seen.

Uh.....I care because we are 1-6 against them in the last 7 meetings.

Trolls do not survive here with out Moderators.
Most of us "Bamers" really could not care less what Aubies say or think.
Honest discussion w/o flaming is always welcome here.
Last I looked, Auburn is on our schedule and how an opponent plays, especially Auburn, before Bama plays them is always of interest.

I have not seen anything that makes me worried about an Iron Bowl outcome. However, I was laughing with the best of them, after the Chizik hire, that the barn would be lucky if Ball St was their first win or even game 9 (Fuhrman).

Clearly, Auburn are much better than this, and much better than some of the wilder prognostications allowed for. Which I think is a good thing. In terms of championship credibility (a thought that sticks in my craw a bit after last night's performance), our problem is strength of schedule, and it would not hurt our claim at all to defeat a resurgent Auburn late in the season.

Before we give them too much credit consider these:

ANY top 40 program would start 5-0 w/ their schedule. They've beaten probably a top-half Sun Belt team and absolutely the worst SEC team (Vandy will run MSU off the field next week). They have WVU upcoming at home, and WVU is now a garbage fire. Ball State is one of the worst teams in America, and TN just lost to a subpar UCLA squad sporting a freshman QB not named Matt Barkley in Neyland Stadium. Crompton can't throw a dime in the ocean, much less hit the broad side of a barn. Tennessee's pathetic. Auburn should be able to sleepwalk to 5-0 barring catastrophic injuries.

If AU isn't 5-0 going into Ark, then they can aspire for the Independence Bowl as a "reach" goal. They'll carry an unblemished record and a #22 ranking into Arkansas thinking all is well with the world only to be brought crashing back to reality with a ten point loss. At 5-1 they won't panic. Dropping out of the top 25 will be a minor setback, and their fans will site the hackneyed "it's almost impossible to win back-to-back road weeks in the SEC" excuse.

They'll beat UK at home to become bowl-eligible. They'll declare Chizik and Malzahn invincible geniuses. Then they'll drop consecutive games to LSU and Ole Miss. They'll take out some frustration on Furman, but it will only make them feel better. No one else will even notice.

By the time they head into Athens they'll be hobbling from a lack of depth, batterred and bruised. They'll face an under-achieving UGA squad w/ 4 losses, and Richt's job will be on the line. IF AU plays above their heads they could conceivably win this game, but my bet would be on UGA taking care of business in spite of themselves, probably outlasting AU in the 4th quarter.

Then they'll get a bye week.

Then they'll host Alabama, who due only to sloppy play, miscues and special teams breakdowns will have lost 2 or 3 games by that point. Even for Alabama fans the beating of an unarmed man with a tire iron will be easier to watch than this game. The only two things having separated the Tide from another unbeaten regular season would be 1) a series of miscues in Oxford that was almost overcome late in the fourth quarter until a false start at the Ole Miss goal line transforms an almost-certainly game-winning touchdown into a botched game-tying 26 yard FG attempt sailing infuriatingly wide left and 2) the LSU at home curse. Without the Gators and the SECCG looming large the following week the '09 IB will be the 45-7 blowout it oughta be. IF Bama cleans up their play between now and Arkansas then the Tide could get caught looking ahead to UF and only win 28-17 in a quintessential 1981 or 1999 style-game, probably coming from behind midway through the 4th quarter and adding an "insurance run" late.

AU will be 7-5, with a little luck 8-4, and if all of their stars align 9-3. It will probably take significant injuries or bad luck to turn in consecutive losing seasons, but certainly they're only one solid hit on Todd's bad shoulder away from that. Expect to find them somewhere between the Indy Bowl and the Peach Bowl, with Music City being most likely.

I strongly agree. I didn't want to jump on THEIR bandwagon, but I knew Malzahn would be a jewel. You've gotta give credit where credit is due (even though they've yet to play an above average opponent), but unlike last year where the offensive coordinator was the reason they fell off the map, offensively, this year the offensive coordinator is the reason they're "gelling" on offense.

Well, it can't hurt that the OC has the head coach behind him. It also can't hurt that the offensive staff seems to be on the same page with the same goals and a common philosophy. Last year was a train wreck on the auburn staff and thats an understatement!

Tennessee's is not that bad on Defense (second behind Bama's in the SEC). in fact their D was the reason UCLA couldn't capitalized on the Volunteer's miscues. otherwise the game would have been out of reach much sooner than later.their running game will cause problems for auburn's front seven, esp. for the smaller LBs. plus the game is at Tennessee. they will be ready to play and payback will be on their minds.

Kentucky will not be a cake walk either. MSU will be the worst SEC team aubarn will play on their schedule. they are a cuople of injuries as well as lack of depth away from a sub par season.
