Re: Carlos Dunlap arrested for DUI (out for SECCG?)

Losing your right defensive end, especially one as good as Dunlap is very similar to losing a left offensive tackle like Andre Smith.

Regardless of how much depth you may have those guys just can't be replaced 99 out of 100 times.

It would hurt the Gators terribly if he doesn't play. It opens up options for our offense that simply will not be there if he's in the game.

I can't see Meyer suspending him simply because, at this point, he'll probably say it wouldn't really be fair to the rest of the team.

Hard call though for Meyer. Almost a no win situation.

Yea and it turns out that Paul Kruger guy is a pretty good football player.

Re: Carlos Dunlap out of the SECCG

UM has no choice. The dude was slumped over the wheel of his car at an intersection! God knows how much alcohol it took to do that to a man his size. Perhaps the cops would have handled it differently with a little alcohol on his breath, but they had no choice in this matter.

Either the dude is toast or UM's reputation is toast. Bets?
Dunlap will play and Meyer will do everything he can to downplay the incident.

This may very well be the catalyst that drives UM to Notre Dame.

1) Don't suspend him to and win
2) Take the heat from the nation as Florida's coach
3) Make a splash by moving to one of College Football's most storied programs
4) Profit

What I am hearing is he will receive a 1 week suspension effective 12/06/09. Of course, that just may be the voices in my head talking again. :conf2:

Re: Carlos Dunlap out of the SECCG

The difference, of course, being timing. It took us a few games to work out the kinks in replacing Hightower.
My point, though, is that while it may be a huge break for us, it's not much different than the break FL's getting by not having Hightower in the game. Yes, we've had a few games to adjust and they will have a week to adjust; but if Hightower were playing, our defense would be even stingier than it is now. As good as our D is, it was even better with Hightower.

The breaks are all relative, IMO.

Hard call because it is Meyer making it? :conf3:

IMO, any coach with an ounce of integrity would have to suspend a player who gets a DUI for at least one game - no matter what that game might be.

I see him playing the "innocent until proven guilty" card, even though a decision not to take the breathalyzer test makes this a slam dunk...
I agree with this post. UM will let him play until his court date, which will be after the season. On the other hand, maybe UM will do whats right...but i seriously doubt it. :frown:

If the national media DOESN'T rake Meyer over the coals for playing Dunlap, I will be very, very disappointed. As much as it would hurt us, if this were Marcel Dareus, I'd be saying the same thing.

No excuse for DUI, and the apparent extent of his intoxication makes it that much worse. Suspend the player until their court date, then take action depending on what the court decides.

FWIW... I went over to gator country and most fans are saying: CUM must do right thing and suspend him. In fact; some are saying he has played his last game as a gator as he was expected to go pro.

Got to wonder what in the heck he was thinking. Apparently, he wasn't thinking at all.

I won't be surprised if he is not suspended, but he should be. And if he is, make no mistake, it will hurt Florida.

That's refreshing, at least.

It would have been different if he got pulled over for a busted tail light and they caught a slight whiff of alcohol on his breath. The guy was passed out, unable to function, at a red light with his car in gear. That's complete and total irresponsibility.

Re: Carlos Dunlap arrested for DUI (out for SECCG?)

From the ESPN Article....

"They approached the car and found the suspect slumped over in the driver's seat," Kameg said. "He appeared to be asleep. The car's windows were cracked so they attempted to wake him up. They talked to him and he would only open his eyes for a few seconds and then fall back asleep."

Kameg said officers were able to unlock the car and turn off the ignition. Kameg said officers reported that Dunlap "had trouble listening to instructions." He was given a field sobriety test and performed "poorly," according to Kameg. He refused to take a Breathalyzer at the scene, Kameg said.
That's not a "I had a beer and forgot to eat dinner and just went over the line" DUI... that's an "Jeez, I know who this kid is and I would let him go if it weren't so incredibly bad that I don't have any choice BUT to arrest him" drunk.

Interesting that there was 2 hours between the traffic stop and the booking. I wonder if there was some thought given to NOT arresting him...

With this type of incident I am not sure how Meyer is going to get away without suspending him. If he blew a .0081 and some officer was over zealous or something that might be one thing... but this is so incredibly clear-cut that I can't see a way for him not to be suspended.

I agree. There's absolutely no way to sugarcoat the incident, but Meyer and co. will find one and Dunlap will play.

Urban Meyer:

This isn't Carlos Dunlap, and it isn't representative of University of Florida football. But I believe in Carlos. He is suspended for the first half of the Florida Southern game next season."

If those news reports of the incident are correct, I would be shocked if Dunlap plays. Seems to me Meyer's hands are tied on this one.

Re: Carlos Dunlap arrested for DUI (out for SECCG?)

I believe 'Sip was right in alluding to how this is similar to us losing Andre for last year's Suger Bowl (if UM does suspend Dunlap).

Not only do you lose a great player that can't be replaced with a sub of equal ability and impact, they also have to deal with the distraction that this will be. This takes valuable prep time away from them this week.

While the Gators may still find a way to win, if CD doesn't play it will affect the game in some way and it will obviously be to Bama's favor.

Re: Carlos Dunlap arrested for DUI (out for SECCG?)

I really dislike people who get behind the wheel of a car and put families, children, etc. in danger just because they are stupid. This guy was obviously very intoxicated, and I see no way him getting to play Saturday. I mean he could have killed innocent people. Thank God he didn't, but he can't be above the law just because he is a very good player on a very good team and in the national spotlight.
