I am pretty sure Rumph will be trained to coach per Saban's philosophy and scheme. There are many qualified ...'t coaches out there and the thing that distingiushes one from the other is their ability to recruit. Saban went after Rumph for a reason.
The Clemson DC is Steele.

Excellent hire, very excited about this. This tells me that CNS really liked what he saw CCR in both recruiting and on the field coaching, and had him as a target for some time. Not only did he do very well with the Clemson's DEs this year, but he also is affiliated with Steele and Clowney. Looks like CNS wants to tap more into South Carolina...

It looks like Rumph has a very good recruiting pedigree, with experience in Memphis and in South Carolina. And with some of the players he's coached, he's got something to sell to recruits.

On the other hand -- and you don't know how much of this is sour grapes, etc. -- I gather that some Clemson people think he's a great recruiter but not a great coach. South Carolina people seem to agree, but also, they might be getting a little more worried about Clowney.

In any case, if Saban jumped on him so fast, you gotta figure he feels like he got the guy he wanted.
IMO, Clemson's coaching problems are not with the assistants......

Rumph was a good LB at USC in early 90s. Not especially the most talented kid on the field, but a ball hawk and a bit of a student of the game. USC fans have been disappointed that the Gamecocks have not swooped him up since he played 4 seasons here and was a GA here. He's been seen as an up and comer for a while in the assistant ranks. As already pointed out, he's a very good recruiter and seems to relate well to the HS kids. IMO this is a very good pickup for the Tide. Will it help with Clowney? Who knows (it certainly can't hurt), but this is a hire that stands on its own, with or without Clowney. It's also a sign IMO that the clemson program is on the verge of imploding and Rumph saw the writing on the wall.

It's amazingly awesome watching Coach Saban work his magic..He's always 3 steps ahead of any situation that arise..The "Process" is steadily laying the foundation to what could be one of the most dominate Era's in college football history..

please get a pass rush

:biga:eek:ur defensive line was weak this year, no pass rush and we were knocked off the ball against the run, this may very well be one of the things saban said he had to fix. coming from clemson does not excite me though!

This is what you call getting a quality replacment for a coaching vacancy in short order. I love it, great hire.

Rumph leaving Clemson to coach at Alabama | The Post and Courier, Charleston SC - News, Sports, Entertainment
Rumph was one of the longest-tenured assistants at Clemson, joining the staff in 2005.

The departure could be related to Alabama’s deeper wallet and perhaps Rumph looking at the opportunity as a chance for greater visibility. But after Clemson’s first losing season in 12 years, some might perceive Clemson coach Dabo Swinney to be potentially entering a lame-duck season.

Rumph was also an able recruiter and was in charge of landing commitments from Marlin Lane (RB), Grady Jarrett (DT) and Cortez Davis (CB) in Clemson’s 2011 recruiting class.

Unlike the departures of Billy Napier and Andre Powell, national recruiting analyst J.C. Shurburtt thought this move could negatively affect Clemson’s 2011 recruiting class.

I was late to it, but Coach Rumph is close to him. From a video I saw ,it could be that a relationship is developing between Clowney and Cyrus Kouandjiowhat coup if we got both!
Did anyone see those two get after it yesterday on ESPN? They are both terrific and gave great interviews. Welcome Coach Rumph and Roll Tide!!!

Which USC fans are disappointed? IMHO poor decision, the guy has squandered such great talent at Clemson. It took DaQuan 3 years and his father passing to finally live up to his potential, and Maliciah Goodman has either been an over-hyped or under coached player considering what physical tools he has. I mean he was hired when Gaines Adams graduated so don't give him credit for that either.

Saban must see something that I don't and that's why he's getting the mega bucks and I'm not.

i wouldnt call a top ten pick squandering their talent. it takes around three years to develop most players in the first place. and he was a great recruiter at clemson just by snatching bowers and many others.
