I think it's Saban that keeps it vanilla at times. I think that has to chance somewhat this year. We can't keep letting opponents that we have on the mat, back in the game. That beat us as much as anything last season.
We won't know for sure for a couple more games. Outside of the opening drive today, we haven't seriously been challenged yet.

Run blocking is still pretty spotty.
I agree. We did gain almost 200 yards on the ground today. That's good. But it seems the backs are taking the hand off and running right into a mass of bodies. There is seldom a hole and they just gain whatever they can on their own effort.

I wonder how many yards were gained when we ran the "stretch" vs. between the tackles?

I believe that CNS has the final say on plays called.
Without a doubt, CNS has final say. He's said so himself. However, it's my opinion that we're going to see fairly vanilla play-calling all the way through next week's game. If Saban is going to change his philosophy of going conservative with a lead and letting the defense win it (I don't think he will), we won't know until the Arkansas game at the earliest. Our defense just hasn't been challenged enough yet to feel the need for the offense to take chances with a big lead.

I thought the team turned in a very solid performance and exceeded my expectations. Not to take anything away from the defense because I do believe the are the best in college football, but PSU has the two worst QBs I have ever seen on one team. Neither of their QBs would receive a scholarship to any SEC school and that includes Vanderbilt. How can a program like PSU not sign anything better than those two?

JMHO - I don't like that we wait until we are desperate to open up the offense. I think those things need to be battlefield tested before we get in such a situation. We haven't seen CJM's "offensive mind" in full force yet!

Post-game thoughts:

Our Defense is the best in the Country. They just are.....and will keep us in every game this year. Dominant play by the LB's and CB's.

AJ McCarron is the MAN. He is our QB and that's it. I have not given up on PS by any means but AJ is the guy.

The O-line is Atrocious however. No matter how much I love Bama I can't spin that. As soon as TR or EL hits the hole....well there is no hole and what yards they get they get by driving their legs and dragging 5+ defenders. The line just can NOT run block. The pass blocking was sketchy at times too as about half or more of AJ's incompletions were knockdowns because a defender was able to get his meat hooks up.

We NEED badly to get CyKo out at LT and move BJones back to guard. BJ is an ALL-American guard. He's an average SEC LT. By putting him out there it creates two weaknesses on the line instead of one. Andre Smith and Carpenter were 1st year starters at LT. Let's give Cyko a chance PLEASE.

IMHO our best line should be CK-CW-WV-BJ-DJ. If the line stays like it is I am sorry but there will be no Championships this year. Our Defense is AWESOME but it's not good enough to cover up a terrible Offensive running game for 14 weeks. No Defense has ever been that good.

We all want a 100-0 game every week, that goes without saying.

But watching this game, especially with any knowledge of the game and trends, you know that by midway through the second quarter it was over. Saban would never admit that, but he knew it and the play calling shifted accordingly. It was vanilla-ish from the beginning, but as soon as CNS was comfy, it became pure vanilla extract...

Time will tell how good we really are, and while I wish we stomped everyone's throat into the ground, I'll defer to CNS's judgement.

JMHO!! Once the game was in hand, and lets be honest, after we went up 17-3 the game was over, PSU was not going to drive the field and score on our D! Another thing is, Saban has great respect for Joepa, and would not run up the score on him.
Now after we started the 2nd half, how many times did we throw past 10 yards down the field? I don't think we did, we never tried to stretch the field or get behind PSU D, I took it as, we have this game won and Saban wanted to show respect for Joepa, I feel like we could have hung another 20 if we had tried, this is probably the last time Saban ever gets to coach against one of the top 5 coaches of all time. Defense was great, offense did enough to win the game comfortably, the only thing to nickpick about is our punting!!!!!! OMG!!!! can we not find anyone that can punt the freaking ball more than 34 yards???? thats my only complaint.
RTR!!

People, maybe the best team in the Big Ten spent an entire year exercising and scheming to beat us. They pulled out all the stops and the fans were nuts. We still basically named the score, i.e. we closed the playbook in the 4th quarter and ran out the clock. I'm not overlooking LSU or any sleeper team on the schedule, but I'm elated.

PS- we'd beat AU 1000 times out of 1000 right now.

If we have, I haven't seen it. We've either scrapped it, or have something special planned for future SEC opponents. I'm betting on the latter.
We are good enough to beat teams like KSU/PSU/North Texas by being vanilla and that is why Bama offense seems to be vanilla early on. Coach does not want to give his future opponents anything they can prepare for. I think you will see the offense open abit when SEC plays starts. Until then, I expect a vanilla gameplan against NT, Sims (both of them) will play most of the 2nd half and Bama developing a more complete schemes starting with Arkansas.

Getting really tired of this OL configuration. Put Cyrus at LT and move Jones back to RG. Steen is USELESS. Vlachos hasn't been stellar either.

The game was over early. Going forward it will good to get the o-line rotation squared away. And one of the cornerbacks needs coached up or replaced imo

we looked amazingly slow in the first quarter. our db's looked oddly slow to react to what was happening. i am referring mainly to defense and kick/punt return but even our offense looked slow with the up the middle runs.
our o-line is horribly bad at opening holes. it seems like our running backs were hit in the backfield all day.
basically our play was unacceptable for a bcs champ. caliber team. maybe im being a negative nancy but we better get our act in gear bc this team reminds me more of saban's first yr team than our nat champ yr team.

I pretty much agree.

The problems with our OL are mostly the G-C-G. BJ did whiff a couple of times at tackle also.

The pass protection was maybe slightly better than last week but thats not saying much.

The biggest thing to me is the pure whiffs where the defense guy is in the backfield before the handoff.

The delayed handoff's don't help much either.

I know the play calling is going to be vanilla (understatement) and the game was NEVER in doubt, but the terrible OLine run blocking is disturbing.

Reckon what does the Oline coaching change have to do with the subpar play?

Also, the punting and kickoff's are disappointing.

I understand your concern, but slow it down (figure out another way to express your frustrations). We have a strict policy here of no player bashing.

Great Win! O-Line looked better, I don't believe AJ got touched but once. My only concern is still a lack of a consistent pass rush. Got one more tune up before the hogs come to town. Roll Tide.

Perhaps I was a little harsh. My apologies. However, I don't believe Steen is the man for the job at RG. We know BJ is much more comfortable there and we've seen what Cyrus can do. If they're so adamant about keeping BJ at LT, why not put Arie K in there at RG?
