Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno says that he has decided to retire at the end of the season

In my opinion, a naked adult in the "showers fondling or doing something of a sexual nature to a young boy" is a crime, not "horsing around." This has become ridiculous...
Right. Adult, child and naked are three things that should never be combined. And yet there are still idiots out there that think it's okay to bathe with their own children beyond infancy. Go figure.

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno says that he has decided to retire at the end of the season

Was just watching the evening news, they said that the board is meeting tonight and Paterno may be forced to leave this week. All this was breaking news this hour.

Wouldn't it be interesting and sick, if it came out that the parents were payed off in the beginning by the admin. the economy being the way it is, the well runs dry. Despicable people on both sides!

I have absolutely no faith in humanity!

And on top of it all.............. Sandusky has been released on bond. Yeah, I know it's part of the legal process but IT JUST AIN'T RIGHT!

Re: Penn State Officials Reportedly Planning Paterno's Exit

BTW... why didn't the guy (who happens to still be at PSU) that originally reported this to Joe go to the cops???

What I want to know is why he didn't immediately go to the aid of this child? Even as a female I know (from experience) that I would go up against a man much larger than myself to stop a child from being physically or sexually abused.

Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for numerous sexual assaults of minors

Oh, it's getting deep now.

Waiting to hear when/how/if the NCAA will also pile on - as they should, IMO.
Yah, I mean, this already appears to be the worst offense I've ever seen in NCAA history - SMU is nothing compared to this in the grand scheme of things.

If the DOE and NCAA get involved, this may be the 'new SMU'.

Of course if any of the the stuff we've heard turns out to be true, even that would be too good for those involved...

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno says that he has decided to retire at the end of the season

I think there will be a laundry list of unintended consequences to this as well. I can just imagine what the parents of all the students who attend PSU must be thinking, not to mention the parents of those who are active within the sports programs. Many of them must be furious at these revelations. When they realize that a coach has been allowed to prey on children for years and that the school administration did nothing, their worst fears may be realized. I wouldn't at all be surprise to see many of those students not being allowed any further participation in those sports, or being withdrawn from PSU altogether.

I doubt they are worried about their 18 year olds being molested by the Athletic Department. Probably more about them being molested at the "after game" parties! Someone had to say it!

I'm with you! I've been screaming this at the top of my lungs for the last few days. Forget all the other stuff about chain of command etc... It is my understanding that not only did this GA see this but there was a janitor at some point that saw an attack as well. I don't care if it's Mike Tyson I immediately attack the guy and the child gets away while he beats me half to death. I can not understand how a human being with a soul could see that and walk away. It makes me so sad for the world we live in.

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno says that he has decided to retire at the end of the season

You know, I guess the one reason I am hesitant about this situation is that I almost can't believe that could happen. If it is all true, then my whole opinion of humanity is shaken. How could the GA have seen what he claimed and not immediately done something? If he reported it, how could Paterno not have acted? If Paterno didn't act, why didn't the other two officials when they learned of it? And if Paterno and the other two tried to cover it up, why didn't the GA go to the police? I don't think I know a single person (I hope) that would cover up the rape of a 10 year old boy, much less four.

That humanity would be guilty of this does not surprise me at all. The buck is passed along to someone else all the time in many other situations.

There is little worse than the molestation of a child. It is almost worse than murder, IMO. Really it is worse. These victims will live with this forever. And to know that adults stood by instead of coming to their rescue... I have little sympathy for Paterno. I don't give a damn if he was told graphic details or if he was told that Sandusky was horsing around with a kid in the shower. And I'm not calling for Paterno to go to jail. I don't know the law for his situation. What I am saying is his legacy means nothing if he stood by while innocent children were made to live through that horror.

That's what I don't understand about any of this. These men were thinking of their legacies, their careers, and decided it was best to cover it up or pass it along and hope someone else does the right thing. How does it hurt your career to put a stop to child rape??? My God I cannot fathom what goes through a person's mind that they just "hope" it will be all right. When you see it, PUT A STOP TO IT.

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno says that he has decided to retire at the end of the season

All I'm saying is I can imagine a scenario, a plausible one, where the GA doesn't say that he saw Sandusky having sex with the kid. If he said those words, then this is all out the window. In the grand jury report, if you read what Curley and Shultz said, you can see how it might not have appeared as serious at the time. If what they said was true, it's a much closer question about whether you want to get the police involved. Now, the grand jury found them not credible, and they may very well have perjured themselves.

The thing is, this does not appear to be a case where Paterno whitewashed the story to Curley and Shultz. They met with the GA and discussed the incident independently. Now, say it was one of your best friends of 40 years. Maybe you even have suspicions about him not being on the up and up. You report this incident, and a week later Curley and Shultz call you, tell you that they investigated it and found no wrongdoing. That it was a misunderstanding, just some horsing around that looked bad, or whatever. Are you really going to call the police and tell them that your friend is a child molester, based on that?

Like I have been saying, I am perfectly willing to accept that Paterno is an evil, child molesting, NAMBLA apologist. But the rush to judgment, fire him tomorrow, he should never coach again, tear down his statue and take his name off the Big 10 trophy idea is not one I can get behind just yet.

Boston I understand your hesitance to jump on the down with them all wagon and I can respect that. It is always best to take a position of gathering all the facts and being sure you are getting the truth. But please remember this isn't Maycomb Alabama, there is no Bob or Mayella Ewell, no Tom Robinson, no Heck Tate or even Boo Radley. This is a white man who has been given ever benefit of the doubt along the way. As matter of fact people have done their best to look the other way. The grand jury testimony is pretty darning stuff and with the number of very credible witnesses growing it's hard to see that there wasn't something very sinister happening there.

The grand jury testimony is absolutely disgusting to me and to my understanding Jo P was told enough to know that something not right was happening. I don't care how it was explained to him because if you use the words, man, boy and naked in the same sentence describing a situation it should alarm you. I also don't care if it is your own mother or father you should get to the bottom of it. Are we supposed to believe that he just forgot about it during his busy days and didn't remember to follow up on it? How could you get that out of your head?

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno says that he has decided to retire at the end of the season

Since when is it "horsing around" when a grown man and a boy are cavorting naked in a shower?

there is an opinion piece in the New York Times online right now, written by Maureen Dowd. If you want to know what Paterno heard or at least the exact quotes the Grand Jury was told he heard you can read it there.

I did not link it for a reason. It's graphic, it's disgusting, nauseating and infuriating. It has completely moved me from the "let JoPa go out with his dignity" camp to the "run him out of town on a rail" camp. My bet is that it's more than Brent wants on tidefans, I respect that so I won't link it.

That is EXACTLY what I said.

And I'd be lying if I said I don't think of him as an accessory to the crime because of his (continued) inaction.

Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for numerous sexual assaults of minors

How was Sandusky even able to use the weight room up until last week with all this already known!

That's the problem with JoePa! Is he senile? Does he have CRS? He should have demanded that that FREAK NOT be able to be in an athletic facility or even on the PSU's campus.

Did JoePa just turn his head to what was taking place?

Don't they have Staff Development programs that cover this topic? If they didn't I'd be very surprised. The DA should have known what to do: no if's ands or buts. Even public elementary and secondary schools have staff development regarding this topic. You report this to the proper authorities or you can be fined for failure to make the report in Texas. If you as a teacher see it, it's your responsibility to report it!
