Both football coach Joe Paterno and president Graham Spanier are out at Penn State in the wake of a disturbing child sex abuse scandal involving a former assistant coach.

Paterno said in a statement Wednesday he would retire after the season, but the university's board of trustees met Wednesday night and decided Paterno would not be allowed to continue as coach effective immediately. Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley has been named interim coach.

Spanier chose to resign Wednesday and will be replaced temporarily by provost Rodney Erickson.

John Surma, the vice chair of the board of trustees said, "these decisions were made after careful deliberations and in the best interests of the university as a whole."

"The past several days have been absolutely terrible for the entire Penn State community. But the outrage that we feel is nothing compared to the physical and psychological suffering that allegedly took place," he added.

Speaking at his house to students, Paterno said, "Right now, I'm not the football coach, and that's something I have to get used to."

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno fired!

Sad ending, sad story, for all involved, especially the victims. The PSU Board of Trustees did the right thing as they said in the best interest of their university. The healing can begin and it will take them a long time to get over this. PSU interim coach Tom Bradley takes over in a deep whole to dig out of.

Not trying to defend Paterno, but this is a sad way to see a great career end.

Agree. It never works out when someone rationalizes, justifies, excuses, or covers up wrong-doings at the expense of someone else.

BOT definitely took charge and made a decision. JoePa needed to go and he should be glad he is not wearing shackles while awaiting trial.

Edmund Burke had no clue of the wisdom of his words..."All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." Lots of evil has occurred, and is occurring now. All because "good" men did nothing. Literally.

The PSU Board of Trustees did the right thing... HOWEVER, they didn't finish the job. The AD should have been dismissed.
The cowardly G.A./now assistant coach who saw the rape and didn't stop it is still on the coaching staff...

Are the students trying to show support of Joe or do they honestly feel he shouldn't be fired?

Re: PSU Coach Joe Paterno fired!

In my opinion, if Penn State's board is going to present Joe Paterno as a burnt offering in an effort to save face for a complete breakdown in moral and ethical process then they should get them all. Everyone involved even remotely should be held to the same standard. The entire situation is tragic.

a quick survey of a couple PSU boards seems to be both and neither ... they're not sure how to feel. some are angry over the fact that he was fired over the phone; some are hoping the rioting students escalate .... it's a mess

They wouldn't know if you asked them. I'm not condemning PSU Students, just commenting on the mentality of a mob made up of 20 year old college students with little life experience.

Yes, I was shocked that the the GA...MIKE McQUEARY..wasn't the first name mentioned. I am just hoping that Tom Bradley asked for permission to fire him personally to send a message.

I guess they don't understand that the institution is more important than the man.
