Re: BCS Computer Rankings (as they are released) - when adding , check your DATES!

What is the deal with Wolfe that keeps getting referenced?
Earlier this morning Andy Staples tweeted that he'd received an email indicating that the Peter Wolfe computer ranking had Bama 2, OSU 3. This is significant because the BCS formula drops the highest and lowest rankings from the 6 computer polls and averages the remaining 4 to calculate the computer component of the formula, and Sagarin is already confirmed to also have Bama 2, OSU 3. If the Staples tweet about Wolfe is accurate, the Sagarin ranking will count, and OSU has a much steeper hill to climb in toppling Bama from BCS #2. If the Wolfe info from Staples is not accurate and Bama can't get another #2 ranking from the remaining 4 computer polls, the #2 ranking from Sagarin will be discarded, and OSU has a much easier path to #2.

It's complicated, but that's the gist of it. Bottom line, no matter what happens in the computer rankings, if Bama wins Harris by at least 53 (which IMO is likely), we're in.

So someone is questioning the validity of the tweet. Got it. If I had a guess, ESPN is sending out the seeds of doubt to get everyone to watch tonight...ratings, ratings, ratings.

The BCS needs to reevaluate any computer that ranks a 3 loss OU team in the top 10. That is a joke and how can you trust anything else that computer spits out after that.

The good (and sometimes bad) thing is, social media will probably have everything leaked before 5 hours from now. You know people can't keep their mouths shut.

I don't understand why you would throw out the high and low computer rankings. Seems to me you should simply add them up and then find the average.

Why even have them if two are going to be thrown out?

agree 100%. ridiculous. especially an OU team that dangerously looked like they intentionally tanked a game last night to keep big money in the conference. Landry Jones looked like a middle school QB.

It's to remove the effect of outliers. Statistically it's an appropriate procedure.

Some of the formulas produce wacky results. One poll might have a team #1, another #14, while the rest have that team around #3. The BCS considers it more "fair" to throw out the "outliers" - like they do in the Olympics.

Agree with you and RT1017....I'm only speculating, but since the computer polls aren't allowed to factor in how BAD somebody loses/wins, if there is a preseason bias toward the Big12 being stronger than it really is, it makes OU's losses look like "good" losses....I don't know....just trying to explain the unexplainable.

Yeah, but it is a tweet from a single journo saying he got an email from somebody. That's not exactly well-sourced. May turn out to be true, but I don't think it quite warrants taking to the bank yet.

HoopJsn is correct - it's to eliminate outliers. Olympic judging has always done this to try to eliminate a judge gaming the system.

I do agree that an algorithm that puts OU in the top 10 should be eliminated from the BCS in the future.

Hope your calculations are on target. Last week in Harris, we were #2 with a 342 point lead over #5 OSU. Stanford was #3, with a 98 point lead over OSU. So for OSU to close the gap sufficiently to get in New Orleans, they's have to jump one team that has the same record they do (not to mention a much higher quality loss), and make up 289 points on us, when we have the highest qualify loss of anybody.

All on the strength of blowing out a team that also lost to Texas Tech and Baylor.

Possible, but not likely, especially given the makeup of the Harris voting base.

Under 2008 Slive/SEC plan it'd be: Stanford-LSU, OSU-Bama. B12, P10 said no. <--- Tweeted earlier by Wetzel. I didn't know a lot of the information in the article he posted, but it does show (along with the documentary "Play that Changed College Football") that the SEC has had to force the other conferences to move forward. Oh and add the Big/Pac 12 conference championships in there too. Either way this one goes folks it will help Bama, period.

One thing to take some comfort in: As far as I know, no credible analyst has yet projected OSU in the BCS.
