New coach search...

Guys... I don't know if we want to go NFL route with no recuiting experience.... They would need to build staff with veteran college experiences...I still think we will know more about coaching candidates by this weekend.

I've questioned Battle over this search, but I sure hope he knows not to go get a coach from the NFL.

For those freaking out about Pitino "turning Bama down" please read this.

Pitino had been reportedly contacted by Alabama for its vacant head coaching job, but sources close to BamaOnLine tell us Pitino was not a target after Gregg Marshall elected to stay at Wichita State. Pitino was not on the short list of candidates and would not have received an offer for the Crimson Tide job.

At this point I would love Prohm. Miller would be my second choice. I know that Prohm would not have the initial splash we were looking for with CGM, but I really think by time A-day is over, and Prohm is all over the various ESPN/SEC platforms promoting UA hoops, that most of the fan base would be on board.

No Pettway is too young and inexperienced. I would hope whoever they hire he is kept on the staff though. He was our chief recruiter.

I still think TR Dunn would be successful here assuming he would take the job. He was pretty irate when he left. He'd have to have an offensive assistant though. It is ashamed Rah Rah is not here. He would have been great coach at Alabama.
 
I'm SLOWLY warming up to the idea that was tossed out by alabamaintel, hire Steve Prohm as head coach and hire Mike Davis as the associate head coach. You could probably get both for less than we were offering Marshall. The only question would be if both guys would keep their ego's in check so they could work together. I have no idea but it is an interesting proposition. I've never been a fan of Mike Davis as a head coach, he did some weird things at Indiana, but as an associate head coach he might be great. TR Dunn is another name that should get some consideration. We were very successful when he was here before. Perhaps we could take the money we were going to spend on Marshall and spread it out among Prohm, Davis, and Dunn. I know that is not going to happen but it is fun to think about the possibilities.
 
For roster purposes, Pettway seems like one guy that needs to be retained by the new coach. Anyone else? Does Reggie Witherspoon need to be kept on staff?
 
It needs to be a requirement to hiring of a new coach for recuiting purposes. Without him, whoa... not pretty. Witherspoon needs to go somewhere.

T.R. doesn't meet the initial criteria, but I tell you what. He's a winner and has been all his life.
How many 6'4" guards, who can't shoot, and average less than five points per game, can last for ten years plus in the NBA? He did, because he was maybe the best defensive guard I've ever seen.

I believe that TR prefers being an assistant. He is about as humble a person as you will find. I don't think he likes the limelight associated with a head coaching gig. I don't know this for certain, but it is just the impression I get.

A close friend's father coached TR in High School. TR was so focused on doing his role as defender, team player and being an "unselfish player" that there were times they literally had to tell him "quit giving up the ball and shoot". He understood perfectly that "There is no I in TEAM".
 
Maybe Reggie Witherspoon and Pettway could work. I know there is a reason Witherspoon was fired from Buffalo, but if I remember correctly, up til WSU & Xavier games, we we're rolling. Offense was as good as we've seen in years and we kinda attributed it to Witherspoon. Then we lost to Xavier and something happened! I have guesses but dont know. Why isnt Reggie Witherspoon name mentioned as a possibility?

There is really no comparison between Prohm and Miller as far as a coach.

This year because of transfers, disciplinary dismissals and injuries Dayton played the season with 6 scholarshipped players(1 Sr., 1 Jr., 3 Soph, 1 Fr) with not one over 6'6, playing in the A-10 and a decent OOC schedule. They beat Texas A&M and BC at neutral sites, Ga Tech and Ole Miss at home, VCU on the road, Boise and Providence in the NCAA tournament before losing late to OU after scaring them to death.

Last year they beat Gonzaga, Ga Tech and Cal in neutral site games and lost by 1 to Baylor at same tournament. They beat Ole Miss in Oxford. In their NCAA run to the elite 8 they beat 6 seed Ohio State, 3 seed Syracuse, Stanford and lost to num 1 tournament seed Florida in their attempt to get to the final 4.

Though Dayton is a step up from Murray, Murray is a very good mid-major; Prohm has done nothing comparable to Miller as far as even individual victories. Miller is VERY highly regarded in coaching circles. Unlike some HCs he is very hands-on in seasonal and game strategy and tactics. As great as the elite 8 run was, this years' coaching job was spectacular. Prohm nor many others are anything like that.
 
I agree, and i would like to add Prohm, has competitve advantages at murray state. The school always get the best talent by far in that conference no matter who the coach is.
