News Article: Blake Barnett quit the team

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

This event is the fulfillment of a threat made before the season. Nothing more; nothing less. I would guess the pressure on Saban has grown with each game and BB's minutes dwindling, if anything. I guess I still didn't really think they would pull the trigger in mid season...

Earle on the money - and lest we forget Heli-Dad's faux and smarmy reassurance to Tide faithful over the "Blake's back home in California" threa(t)(d)?

Assume you mean a threat by the father, right? Doubt that Saban would let Blake make that kind of ultimatum and remain a part of the team.

Really? If that is true, I'm just that much more relieved that he's gone. We don't need that kind of attitude infecting our program, either from players or their families.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

Saban and all the players seem to disagree with your sentiment. They all feel like they quit on them.

Link? I haven't seen a single player say anything negative about him transferring. All I've seen have been positive tweets wishing him well.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

Something to consider - 2 seasons ago OSU had 3 very good QBs on the roster in Miller, Barrett and Jones. We needed all three that year. With an example so fresh in his memory it boggles my mind that Barnett could not see that he would be abandoning his team if he left in the middle of a title hunt.

But you should note that the team leaders have all been absent in the well wishes via social media.

Stuff like this from Reggie Ragland:

"Never know what god has in store for you but running from a situation is not the answer. If I would have ran I wouldn't be where I am now."

And this from Saban:

"My focus has to be on the players on our team committed to our team. The guys that put the team first are the most important."

None of them are going to come out and trash Barnett. But if you can't read between the lines of the comments from the players and staff, I can't help you.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

One thing that those vehemently defending BB keep talking about is how great he is.

I was pulling for him to win the competition this year, even over Hurts. The problem is in everything I watched (2 A-Days, Practices, and game time) he never looked the part. He's always seemed in over his head, and not the best decision maker.

As a matter of fact, he was given every opportunity to be "the guy" during fall camp. His starting against USC, and there are a few others that may be able to corroborate this, was honestly a move to see if the switch flipped under the lights. It didn't. Hurts was better in practice, and in games, and the team/coaches/people who watched practice saw.

Even after Hurts proved himself, the staff STILL gave BB chance after chance. He never could find any sort consistency in practice or games. That was obvious last Saturday when he came in with the 1's and just couldn't find much success.

So to say the only reason people are upset is due to his talent is ludicrous. He's yet to show much of anything to be upset about leaving. People are upset, as I and others have said, that he quit on his teammates. He left 84 (plus walkons) guys high and dry, in a bind if we have injuries, and to pick up his slack because he lacks the chest to stick it out until December.

Sounds a lot like Gunner Kiel...

I saw one scrimmage in the spring, and two in fall camp. Three total with my own eyes. This post is 100% correct.

And to reiterate what Dzny said: the significant majority here aren't upset that Barnett left. They're upset as to when he left.

The distinction is making a business decision vs. quitting on his team. If statements about daddy's involvement are accurate (and given who's making them, I'm sure they are), the coach of the team he ends up on should gird for daily battle with a helicopter.

The Gunnar Kiel comparison is gonna leave a welt.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

I keep waiting for official word. I read the original Al.com article by Matt Zenitz who said "sources" had confirmed that Barnett was transferring and was no longer with the team. Saban said he was waiting on final word from Barnett and that's the last I've heard so there is still a VERY VERY THIN (microscopic) chance that he stays till December. Teammates posting on Twitter seem to be wishing him well on his journey out of there so who knows. We have so little context for any of this.

As a university employee, Saban is probably limited to what he can say about a student's potential transfer due to privacy laws.

I did a little poking around and juco teams end their season the weekend of November 12. So he wouldn't have many games to play. Plus I don't see a decent coach bringing a new starting QB in midseason. How popular would he be when he displaces a guy who had been there the whole time. And how is he going to learn the playbook that quickly or even make an informed decision on where to go?

Good question unless he had a backup plan all along. He may have already been in touch or reached out before now. The whole thing is extremely strange considering he was the starter not even a month ago.

People have been "reading between the lines" through every Saban presser since he got here. Most of these "reading between the lines" have been proven wrong. Just look up the past 3 qb competition threads of folks "reading between the lines" being dead wrong. I'll give you an example: " Cooper Bateman will be th starting qb because that's what CNS 'seems' to be saying in his presser"

I'll level with you and say that I believe there is some bad feelings amongst the team about it that they won't outright say, but I think it's a bit of a stretch to definitively and 100% interpret what CNS says or 'seems' to be saying as fact unless he outright says 'Blake Barnett is a quitter and a selfish individual'.

You're clearly not in any way close to the situation and/or team. I'll leave it at that.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

BB knows that Jalen has the job locked up long term. He's not going to see any meaningful PT without an injury or something. Without "reading into it" and despite how some of us FEEL about it, seems pretty clear cut doesn't it?
