Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

Let me explore this for a minute. Let's just say this is true - the Dad made threats, helicopter parented, yada yada.

How dense do you have to be to try and work over Nick Saban? Honestly.
What sort of delusional ego must one have to try and walk into the most venerated and revered program in college football and think you are going to strong arm their 4-time national championship winning coach, who's public persona is built on tenacity, discipline and zero compromise?
The level of ego-centricity to somehow think that you are the sun and the Alabama football program revolves around you and your offspring is almost clinically ludicrous.

I worked for a time at a university in a unique department that allowed me to work with students in very informal and out of the classroom settings. Without question the students who learned the least and developed the least over the years I spent watching them get their eduction were the ones who's parents were constantly accompanying them and asking questions and helping them accomplish things. I don't think I know a single one of those kids who is working as a successful professional in their field of study. Take what you will from that anecdotal example.

There are many parents that simply cannot see the world beyond their children. Everyone else is wrong, their children are always right. In the end, they do a huge disservice to their kids, as you've hit on with your anecdote.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

Bryant didn't quit on his teams. He left for a better job.

No one (at least not many) here would have a problem if Blake left at the end of the season. That would be comparable to Bryant leaving for any of his previous jobs.

Blake leaving four games into the season is quitting.

That's the difference.

A good coaching analogy would be when Petrino left the Falcons before the season was over.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

I just wish Redstar would have given us all his inside scoop on QB selection earlier. It would have saved a lot of pointless discourse. :)

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

I don't get the criticism.

You're Blake Barnett and you're an extremely highly recruited QB prospect. You choose to go to Alabama because it's a great program with a great tradition and a great coach. You want to play QB for the tide and you want to win.

You're redshirted your freshman year. Then, as a redshirt freshman you lose the job after a handful of series -- to a true freshman.

If you were one of the best high school QBs in the country and had your pick of schools, would you really want to be a backup? He wants to play, and he wants to play at a high level. Would it be admirable for him to try and fight it out and win the job back from Hurts? Sure. But the writing is on the wall that this isn't his team.

I think some of your need to take off the crimson tinted glasses and look at things from his perspective... Why would you ride the pine when you could be all conference somewhere else?

Dude, the TIMING. You gotta read all the posts if you haven't yet. He's not gonna play anywhere this year so why now when it only hurts the team?

*sigh*

Do you really think people are saying he should finish his career here as a backup? You've read this thread and that's the conclusion you've come to?

I've literally not seen a single post even hinting at that - people are simply saying when you're part of a TEAM, you stick by your teammates. BB is only concerned about himself - quitting in the middle of the season literally does nothing for him regarding his transfer status - it just leaves Bama down one scholarship and minus one backup player in a key position.

Our collective criticism is nearly unanimously about him quitting his team in the middle of the season, not upset that he dare want to play elsewhere.

C'mon people, READ...

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

First off I don't come here much anymore because of the lack of respect of posters and the know it all comments, but occasionally for the insiders who know something that's going on. I hope we find something out pretty soon one way or another.

This. How long does it take to get out of town. Stay....Go.....decide you.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

I keep waiting for official word. I read the original Al.com article by Matt Zenitz who said "sources" had confirmed that Barnett was transferring and was no longer with the team. Saban said he was waiting on final word from Barnett and that's the last I've heard so there is still a VERY VERY THIN (microscopic) chance that he stays till December. Teammates posting on Twitter seem to be wishing him well on his journey out of there so who knows. We have so little context for any of this.

Safe bet teammates know or will know before Coach Saban.

LOL okay, sorry. The thread is 39 pages, obviously I'm not going to read all of it. I just popped in and read the last two pages and saw a lot of back and forth about being a quitter.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

This event is the fulfillment of a threat made before the season. Nothing more; nothing less. I would guess the pressure on Saban has grown with each game and BB's minutes dwindling, if anything. I guess I still didn't really think they would pull the trigger in mid season...

Two kinds of people... Those who wilt under pressure, and give in to a threat, and those who thrive under pressure. These same guys stand up to a threat.

As a genuine tough guy, it's no surprise that Coach Saban is not the kind of guy who will run from a threat. Coach Saban has shown himself to be the man who thrives in pressure situations.

AND...

Blake Barnett has shown that the pressure of competition, on and off the field, affect his performance thus far this year. It's a shame. I thought he might be made of sterner stuff.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

*Yaaaawwwwnnn*

Tell me: What has this kid accomplished at Alabama to this point? If he doesn't want to be here anymore we'll just have to get over such a terrible loss. Frankly, I think it will hurt him more than it will hurt the team.

Just goes to show that Elite 11 and other such 7 on 7 type camps don't always translate to SEC competition.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

Really disappointed to lose Barnett and having read the thread I agree with almost all posters that the timing is not great at all..

But what I will say is that College players have a very small window in which to showcase their talents to NFL scouts. The ultimate goal for almost all College players is to make it to the NFL and I can understand when players feel their window is closing by not getting game time etc..

Also.. Alabama, and all College programs, will do what is best for their particular Program. If that means cutting a players Scholarship, benching a player whatever it is they will do it if it suits them and they will be ruthless. And rightfully so. That being said I think it is slightly hypocritical to then criticize a player for not showing loyalty..

Not to everyone's liking but unfortunately that is just the way things are going with the amount of money in todays game.

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

This is probably unfair to Blake, but I found myself rooting against him in the quarterback battle. I got so sick of reading the QB competition thread and reading about he was our greatest quarterback prospect ever and how he was a sure fire top NFL draft pick and about how great he did at the Elite 11 camp. I just got tired of hearing about how great he is and was hoping someone would show him up on the field.

I would find it hard to root against any one of our players.. If they've got the balls to put their body on the line every play for Alabama then they've got my support..

Re: Blake Barnett Transferring

Had BB handled this the right way, in all likelihood CNS would have done all he could to help BB to land in a better spot where he could have probably had 2 solid years of starting experience at a solid program. BB and his dad doing it their way alienated a their biggest asset and given that he wont be eligible to play until October 2017 he likely wont be a starter at all next season - which still leaves him with only 2 years of starting experience available to him. But with this transition in this way at this time, he has thrown all that away. Very emotional decision made that likely wont work out very well. Just like Smith, who is not even a starter at UGA and seeing his PT dwindling as the season goes on.
