Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

There was one play where the running back (can't remember who) came out of the backfield and blew by his defender and Jalen missed him because he imagined pressure and scooted outside for a short gain. He cannot see the open guy. That would have been a touchdown every time. No one was within 5-10 yards of the guy!

Jacobs.

Tua looks like the love child of Fran Tarkenton and Drew Brees.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Najee. Herbstreit highlighted that as a difference between the two. Said it was 6 if Tua is in the game.

Yes. And Najee was ticked he didn’t get the ball. The play was designed for him. Jalen was pulled 2 plays later mid drive. Think that was the final nail for the coaches. A perfect play call, good protection, wide open player who should be Jalen’s first read and he runs..

Herbie pointed that out. I think it was Najee on an RPO. After the fake he was wide open over the middle but Hurts took the QB run.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

It will be interesting if we fans can find out who gets most of the 2nd team reps this week for Arkansas State... hopefully Mac Jones will get equal reps with Jalen or more reps than Jalen.

I wonder if Jalen will try to redshirt to get 2 more years in ? I am not sure what is best, but he should try to improve (mop up duty) during the year and just use 1 year somewhere else (play in more than 4 games here), but Saban also needs to let Mac Jones get ready.

I hope and pray Tua stays healthy, but if he gets injured, we really need both Jalen and Mac to beat the difficult teams--and maybe that still would not be enough.

Yeah, and on the replay it looked as if Jalen saw it — was looking right at Najee when he broke open. I have no idea why he is so hesitant to throw the ball. It HAS to be frustrating to the other players when they do their job, execute a play perfectly, get wide open, and then are not even given a chance to be rewarded for their efforts. This is the part of Jalen’s game that drives me crazy and makes me ready to move on to a different second string quarterback.

Not only would Tua have thrown the ball, he would’ve seen about a second earlier that Najee was about to be open and would have thrown it before he was actually open. He would have thrown it perfectly to a spot where Najee could catch it in stride and trot into the into zone

When I first watched Tua play last season I had the same thought, his fast release immediately reminded me of watching Joe Namath. Of course his dual threat ability is something Joe Willie never had and his knee injury made it even harder for him to move around in his pro career.

Actually, I have read many accounts that Joe Namath was a very good runner till he blew out his knee. By at least one account he was also All State in basketball as well as football, and received offers from several major league baseball teams. So all around great athlete.

Very frustrating to see a sure TD negated by the QB not seeing the man wide open...............happened a few times

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

There is no longer a QB competition and this thread now only offers an opportunity to say I told you so or a venue
to be negative. Time for it to go.

Joe was quite agile before the first knee injury...

Thought Greg McElroy had some interesting thoughts this morning on the "QB Controversy":

1. If CNS would just name Tua as the starter, there wouldn't be any questions. In one aspect he is the one creating the controversy in an obvious situation.
2. If he doesn't name a starter pretty soon and it's not Tua, he may lose the team f he starts anyone other than Tua. They KNOW who the better QB is and who gives them a better chance of winning.
3. Mac Jones is a capable back-up in the regular offense.

Those are his thoughts.

Jalen needs a good opthalmologist because Stevie Wonder would have seen Najee that wide open.

I've heard others refer to your second point with trepidation..............many are afraid it could cause some talent to leave if he doesn't name one. But Tua may know already he is the starter and the misdirection may be for public consumption. I don't know, just speculating. But I'd hate for the team to go sideways because of any hesitation to name one. He knows who the better one is..............and so do we

And Greg gave an example with it between him and Tua and said "If he started me over Tua, I'd start questioning"!

We have to also understand that these are still kids and not rational thinking adults about Misdirection.

To Greg's credit, he could throw the ball pretty dang good...............but yeah, I'd start wondering myself. I don't understand it all myself, but the risk of losing the team and some players is not something I'd think Saban would do............

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I wonder if this is somehow related to performance of the defense? If Tua gets injured I instantly get worried. I saw a defense that a good SEC could run on. We also appear weak over the middle in pass coverage. I watched the game again and Jennings honestly looked like he was struggling out there or playing out of his natural position.

We are definitely going to need to score a lot of points and may not be able to do that with Mac.

I can’t help but think there’s a clear QB1 and QB2 in practice — just not yet in public.
