Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

It's perplexing at this point. CNS's loyalty seems to be seriously clouding his vision.

There's nothing else to say at this point- Tua is even further ahead of Jalen than the practice reports indicated. Giving Jalen more practice and game reps will only serve to hurt the team in the long run.

Like others, I trust CNS. I mean, I've never even coached football at the pee-wee level, but this is just odd.

What makes Jalen different? He's not had that problem in the past with naming a starter or at other positions.

That's where I am................I think the team and both QBs know who is top dog and who is 2nd..................we are the ones who just don't know it yet.

Well I think we all know it. I just think Coach Saban is “protecting” Jalen by not publicly proclaiming that he has lost the starting job. I think that Coach Saban thinks it would be humiliating to Jalen if/when that happens. I kinda understand this line of reasoning up until now but am not sure I see the point in continuing that approach any longer given the results of the first game. I believe we have now reached the point where not publicly naming Tua the starter makes it appear as if Coach Saban has his head stuck in the sand. While I don’t think this is the case, I think that is the perception. It is simply starting to feel awkward.

Hard to say...........some think it's the parents pressuring him, but I say that is nuts. Saban has never seemed the type to allow anyone to pressure him into anything.

As for protecting Jalen, Jalen is a man and doesn't need protecting..............what is needed is a self assessment to decide where he fits in the scheme and his skills at QB. He probably realizes he isn't the starter, but needs Saban to sit him down and just tell him Tua is the starter. I'm sure that will be a blow to his ego and pride, but it needs to be done. I'm sure the parents wont like it, but it is what it is............

I think we will know without question after this coming Saturday - seems to me if Tua “starts” again by taking the first 20 or so snaps, any questions should be answered about who the “starter” is. It will be the one who CNS thinks gives Bama the best chance to win, and I don’t think there’s any doubt here or anywhere else who that is.
The media wants CNS to throw shade at JH (he already has, and IMO the only way he ever will), and many will give them a pass because they’re “just doing their job”. Not me, because I don’t need confirmation for what we will all KNOW after 9/8, beyond a reasonable doubt.
That is, as long as “starter” means who takes the first snap. As far as “backup”, based off of last Saturday, I think it’s obvious who’s 2 and who’s 3.
It’s all semantics and word games at this point going forward; what happens on the field is reality and I, for one (unlike many), don’t need verbal confirmation for what I can plainly see.

Lets hope this post gets us to 300 pages...

Maybe it’s the fact he’s won 26 games in two years, and has done everything asked of him, and the right way. I don’t know - but CNS has, in the past, been very defensive about “depth charts”, and that’s establishing an order from “starters” on down.
Then again, he’s never had a situation like this, because Tua obviously has more talent than any QB he’s ever had.

No, it was confirmed Saturday beyond a shadow of a doubt................I meant public, out of Saban's mouth confirmation. We really don't need that either, cause actions truly did speak louder than words. But some still need to hear him say it

I can’t help but think there’s a clear QB1 and QB2 in practice — just not yet in public.

If the #2 QB in practice can't pass on a good D, we had better hope the #1 QB does not get hurt and hope the #3 and #4 QB's transfer so we can recruit some QB's who can pass. Personally I would feel much better with #3 if Tua get hurt. At least he can stay in the pocket.

I would as well.................Jones can sling it

What? I think it was abundantly clear that the guy that started the game was clearly the best qb. Is there anybody that still doubts that? Do we really need Saban to say it?

I don't think the Arkansas State game this weekend will tell us anything regardless of who starts. I do think however the following week in Oxford will challenge the offense to score a lot of points since it appears, at least now, that Ole Miss has a potent offense that will put a lot of pressure on our pass rush and secondary.

If Tua starts against Arky St. and then also starts against Ole Miss it will be pretty clear that Saban has picked the permanent starter even though he may not announce it in public.

And, some need to get over themselves!

If I was CNS, I would start Mac against Arky State. That will spin them all out and into the fences.

This👆🏼

I have explained what CNS is doing but few are listening. Stop looking for something that doesnt match what he is doing, you will be disappointed if you keep expecting this to be solved before week 5 or Jalen approaches coach with his long term plans. In the process coach is going to protect all his players to the end. He still has to coach them but he will protect them.

It’s simple.

Tua is the QB coach feels gives us the best chance of achieving all our goals and this is why he started against Louisville and why he got the majority of reps in game and on Thursday before the game with the 1s.

Jalen is a strong leader and can lead this team to many wins at QB. He is only a snap away from being the starter so we cant throw him to the curb. Sure Jones looks pretty good. But anyone who thinks at this point Jones is a better/safer option than Jalen as the backup is only letting your wants or expectations cloud your judgment. No one knows what Jones brings to the table in a big game. We do know what Jalen brings. He may not win us the game himself but he does not give it away either.

Once Jalen’s long term plans have been revealed or discussed with Saban this will all be over. But until then, expect to see him get playing time and snaps with the 1s.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Najee. Herbstreit highlighted that as a difference between the two. Said it was 6 if Tua is in the game.

Correct, I'm rewatching and just saw that exact play. Najee was WIDE open, Jalen was looking at him, but then tucked and ran it for about a 3 yard gain.

That's what we've had to tolerate the last two years. No telling how many TDs we haven't scored because of plays just like this one. No wonder the receivers were so upset last year!

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Actually, I have read many accounts that Joe Namath was a very good runner till he blew out his knee. By at least one account he was also All State in basketball as well as football, and received offers from several major league baseball teams. So all around great athlete.

Joe was quite agile before the first knee injury...

I think Coach Bryant once said Joe was one of the best athletes he ever coached.
