Re: FBI Probe of College Basketball Players, Coaches, and NBA Agents

Actually, he could have picked up some stuff at Harvard. You know who the head coach at Harvard is? That would be Tommy Amaker. Guess who Amaker is a disciple of? That would be Coach K. I’m not saying that he learned it from there, but I’m saying that it isn’t out of the question.

Oh, you're right. Amaker was hired in 2007 and hires a GA from Clemson to be an assistant?

Noticed in the Yahoo story about it there's a nice line:

There wasn’t some deep-rooted sense of disbelief or outrage from the wiretap revelations in the coaching ranks either.

“I don’t think people are surprised, I don’t think coaches are surprised,” a prominent Division I coach familiar with Wade said. “That’s his reputation.”

Good news for Vandy as they head to Red Stick to avoid an 0-18 season.

Not one mention of Gottfried’s ties to Bama. Thought They would have jumped at the opp to paint us red
I saw the name and went oh crap. Couldn’t bring myself to read it. Especially after the fact that b-ball violations were a big part of us getting hammered in the past.

Many of us breathed a sigh of relief when he left Bama - and waited for the statute of limitations to run out...

Guy turned out to be a slime ball, personally and professionally. Gottfried right there with Pearl and Pitino in terms of sliminess.

Re: FBI Probe of College Basketball (Breaking - Wade Suspended)

Just heard on TV that Smart will not play for LSU today. As I posted earlier, I wondered if LSU would pull some players that were obviously referred to on the tapes. Smart may be the the only one that is identifiable at this point but I don't think he is the only player that was getting paid.

I imagine through some more connect-the-dots that other players will become obvious for LSU and other schools since actual names may not get mentioned very often.

LSU doing damage control for what's that worth.

Unless my memory is wrong there never were any actual violations. The assistant (forgot his name) sought out funds from a booster, the booster reported it to the AD, who immediately suspended the assistant and then later fired him once he investigated and verified what he had done. We reported everything to the NCAA and did everything correctly but yet they extended our probation period. I'm still steamed about that especially when compared to what went down with Cam Newton and AU.

And to think Bruce Pearl didn’t know what Persons was up to is LAUGHABLE.

Wade’s a ..... anyway. I went to the LSU game and he should have been T’d up at least twice but, only CAJ got T’d.

Honestly, it appears that if you want a consistent chance at making a deep run in the tournament then you must play slime ball, in the current basketball climate.

Is the sport save-able? I think the NBA should step in and just start taking these kids straight out of high school again. The players don’t want to play in college anyway, it’s just a road block on their way to the NBA. I’d rather have less top tier talent but a bunch of players that really want to play in college.

He may have, but it’s very possible he didn’t. Chuck is accused of steering Wiley and Purifoy toward an agent.

Thankfully, the NBA is working to change the rule. It won’t be until after 2020, though.

Re: FBI Probe of College Basketball (Breaking - Wade Suspended)

A lot of people conflate the alleged recruiting and pay for play violations from other schools with what Person did at Auburn.
Yep. Know the DOJ doesn’t care, but their announcement of all the charges at once ended up confusing people somewhat due to the overlap.

Re: FBI Probe of College Basketball (Breaking - Wade Suspended)

They need to fix the one and done rule and allow kids to enter the draft as a provisional entry where they can go back to if they dont like their draft result after their sophomore year.

They also need to restructure the whole officiating approach as well.

The only to fix college basketball to address both these issues and put renegade coaches in jail.

I wish the NBA would go to the baseball model. The kids are draft eligible out of HS. If they choose to go to college, they are not draft eligible again until after their Junior year if they go to a 4 year school or after 2 years if they go the juco route and graduate. D1 coaches would then know they have a kid for 3 years and can plan their rosters better.
