Russia invades Ukraine - VI

  • Hi Guest, we are working on updating the site servers and software. We're also 'forcing' everyone to read and agree to our site privacy policy and terms of service. There are no significant changes to either of these but the terms page does clarify a few things that are mostly in the legalese. You can just click the checkbox for both and continue using the site as usual! We'll update you more on the site upgrades VERY soon! THANK YOU AS ALWAYS for supporting the site and being an active participant!

You must be joking. If Russia uses a WMD against anyone then they should be toast. Period. Screw increments.
I also believe that it is in our agreement with Ukraine that we made to get them to give up their nukes. If anyone uses a nuke against them we are obligated to defend them. So far Biden has seemed willing to comply with all previous treaties.
“Screw increments.” Wow.

So do you believe that if Putin sends a tactical nuke into unpopulated Ukraine, the appropriate response would be us (whether you define, “us,” as NATO or the United States of America) instantly sending the entire strategic nuclear arsenal into Russia?

If so, how do you justify the 100% certainty that, after those missiles were launched, but before they hit, the Russians would respond similarly toward
- NYC
- Washington DC
- Jacksonville, FL (the nuclear sub base)
- Wherever we have nuclear missiles domiciled
- London
- Paris
- Berlin
- Scapa Flow (primary British Naval base)
- Frankfurt and Stuttgart (primary German steel-making areas, and major USAF base)
- All military academies of every NATO country — wipes out the officer corps for a minimum of 4 years, realistically much longer.
- Every single nuclear power generation plant
- Every single oil refinery
- Every single place where “the cloud” memory resides
- Every single place where records of your money reside
- The major hubs of the power grid, whether nuclear-fired or not

Maybe you enjoy the prospect of heating meals (assuming you can find groceries — for which you will pay with goodness only knows what barter system) over fires fueled by human waste — maybe your own. I don’t particularly relish those prospects, but that’s just me.

If that’s too much of a risk (and I think absent a more direct threat to the US, it is), what would be an appropriate scale down from “screw increments”?

So no, I’m not joking. I am, however, still interested in hearing a better alternative.

I’ll grant you this: Binary thinking is easy.

Nuclear launches are not as accurate as many believe. There is a high percentage that only half at most would ever reach their intended targets. The United States and Russian Federation have the biggest arsenals and the ones with the most capabilities in intercontinental launches but still nuclear warfare is less likely to be launch them all over the world and more "launch a bunch of them here and more here." The Russians would probably place most of their efforts in a nuclear war on French nuclear command, Omaha, DC, and other American towns that are critical for the American nuclear programs. Targeting major cities are less probable and would be a waste of a Nuke. Nuclear War is going to mostly aimed at military targets. Because once everyone blows through their arsenal many of us are still going to be here and all the WWII gamers are going to finally get their infantry war between major powers that they have been dreaming of for so long.

The point is nuclear war is the beginning of the war not the end of it.

Many of you know that one of my least favorite things on the planet is for people to throw rocks at proposals without offering any solutions of their own.
I think that's fair, but I also think it a fallacy to suggest anyone here (with a few possible exceptions) understands the nuances involved on more than an extremely coarse level.

<snip)
There’s a fine line between showing a bully he can’t do whatever he wants vs. inciting a madman to do insane things. I’m trying to put myself in Biden’s shoes and walk that line.
I agree - I'm not calling for nuking Moscow.

But the West (read: not the US alone, but NATO (and quite possibly every country outside of russia)) needs to be ready to be strong here. History shows us this rather plainly.
