While I’m an 100% on the Astros I think it’s worth getting a prediction.

My thing is that everyone is going to hail this as one of the most exciting matchups of all time but I’m seeing a series closer to a 4 game sweep than a 7 game masterpiece. Everyone is going to say “well the Phillies went to St Louis, Atlanta, and San Diego”. Well they got St. Louis and Atlanta cold and San Diego has been one of the most underachieving teams all year. The truth is that had they played Atlanta in a 7 game series then Atlanta probably finds a way to win in 7. But kudos to them for winning. But no one wants to acknowledge that Houston put a stop to Seattle in 3 and the Yankees in 4. The Astros are doing something that is just on an entirely another level.

Prediction: Stros in 5. I think Verlander vs Wheeler will give us false hope for a classic but bad Philly starts to show in game 4 and 5 and we are left cussing the expanded playoffs that prevented us from better matchups.

81 - you weren't even thought of yet when these two teams squared off in MAYBE the greatest post-season series ever, certainly one of them, the 1980 NLCS. I was ten -and it was wild.

I don't think that's what's going to happen this year.

Philly has won the Series twice. The first time (1980) they were no doubt one of the 2-3 best teams in the league; the second (2008), they were probably the best team in the league and we knew it by mid-season.

Houston, meanwhile, has a chance to be the 1976 Big Red Machine, perhaps the greatest powerhouse ever assembled, who tore through a 101-win Philadelphia team and a 97-win Yankees team like they were Double-A ball teams, going 7-0, and winning their second straight World Series. If Houston had beaten us last year - thank God they didn't - this Astros team would be a series win away from ranking among the greatest teams in baseball history.

If they sweep, they may rank among the greatest single-year teams (27 Yankees, 84 Tigers, 98 Yankees).

I think it's five games at most and Houston wins. And they're also seeking to wash away a lot of the scandal, too. Fairly or unfairly, if they don't win another one, the reputation becomes, "They only won because they cheated."

you know honestly I think this maybe sacrilege but we probably lucked out last year with the Astros injury bug. Because had we had to face a healthy Verlander and Mcculers then we would probably be done in 5 last year. The Astros are phenomenally coached, insanely talented, and have a certain moxie about them that may make them a near dynasty. Really Strasberg in 19 and injuries in 21 prevented them from going for 4 in 6 next week. This may be one of the greatest near dynasties I have seen since the 90’s Braves.

Atlanta was only missing their leadoff hitter and catalyst for 1/2 the season including the series, but yeah....

And I believe we were missing Duvall and Ozzie this year.

I mean, "maybe Braves don't win last year" is true - but maybe Phillies don't win this year, too.

It evens out.

The better team right now is Houston, and that isn't close or even remotely debatable. Both teams are smoking hot - but both teams just got a huge layoff.

I have no confidence in the best team winning in the MLB playoffs. The team that stays hot will win. I have no idea which that will be. But I am pulling for the Astros

If the series goes 7 games the Phillies are going to see Verlander and Framber twice. Plus Javier, who IMO has the nastiest stuff on the staff. Then there's Garcia and McCullers. Plus the seeming horde of relievers. All these talking head types picking the Phillies in 6, I just don't understand.

ETA In the series to finish the season, the Astros took the series 2-1, and it may have been 3-0 except for Urquidy pitching (who I don't think will even be on the WS roster)

Strohs in 6.

The Phillies wouldn't have gotten past the Cardinals if Marmels had pulled Helsley when it became clear he had no control of his fastball. The Cardinals blew game one by giving up 6 in the top of the ninth when they had a two run lead. I feel like the Cards would have gotten one of the other two games.

It seemed like that win gave the Phillies confidence, but San Diego was hardly the best team in the west.

I like the Phillies fine, but I can't see them beating Houston. The Dodgers wouldn't have beaten Houston.

For as good as he is, Verlander has been no great shakes in the post-season.

WORLD SERIES
0-6, 5.68 ERA in 7 starts with a clinching loss in 2006 and two Game Six losses (2017, 2019)

LCS
6-4, 3.13 ERA in 11 starts

DIVISION SERIES
8-1, 2.52 ERA in 12 starts and one relief appearance.

If the Astros lose this WS this will be a colossal upset IMO. The Phillies barely finished above 50% winning %. Also, the Astros finished 60 games above .500 compared to 12 games above .500 for the Phillies. This would be a HUGE upset if the Phillies won.

I picking the Phillies for a couple of reasons (and no trolling Braves fans is NOT one of them):

1. Kyle Schwarber. A forever Cub to me. He can play for every team in baseball team in the MLB, but he'll always be a Cub.

2. I respect the drafting and development of the Astros system but I mega-loathe Bregman and Alture. I want nothing bad luck to follow these two for the rest of their careers.

3. I love a good underdog story.

I really want the NL East trifecta over the Astros in the WS. More than that, I want baseball season over so we can get to the Hot Stove.

philly is not a "good" underdog story that would have been the Padres. No one likes philly except philly. I have a coworker from Philadelphia and he hates them.

philly isn’t a good underdog story at all. I pulled for the Nats but I won’t pull for a team that never belonged in the playoffs to begin with let alone the Phillies or Bryce Harper

I *get* why Braves fans don't like the Phillies, I really do, it would be the Cardinals if the roles are reverse but the Phillies are a good underdog story because:

A. They were the last team in the playoffs.
B. They were not suppose to beat St. Louis.
C. They were not suppose to beat ATL.
D. They were not suppose to beat S.D.
E. They will underdogs against the Astros.

Again, I am not trolling you Braves fans but I don't have the same dislike for the Phillies as you guys do.

Again, as much as they might annoy you Braves fan (and I apologize) I much rather the Phillies win then the Cheastros.

FWIW, I am going to be annoyed no matter who wins, but the underdog thing is not accurate unless you are a bookie.

These are not kids trying to overcome long odds. These are professional athletes who played way below their potential all season, got rewarded for that failure with an unearned playoff berths. They should not even be here, just as the cheaters should not be here. Which is why I won't watch a single pitch.

Lose to them twice in the playoffs when you clearly have the better team, and you'll hate Philly like we do.

I think B1G lives not overly far from there, and the fan base is the worst in American sports.
They make the 70s English soccer hooligans look like spiffy elitists attending opera by comparison.

I know you're not trolling FYI. I don't agree with the details, but fine.

I know you are talking ATL/PHIL but you could easily be talking Cubs/Marlins. (2003/2020).

No argument here about Philly fans being the worst in professional sports, but I am not rooting for Philly fans as much as I would like to see the Phillies team win. If the Phillies can win while their fans lose, that would be great.

I do think Houston will win but I would just prefer bad luck to befall the Astros until Alture/Bregman are no longer there.
