BREAKING Kevin Steele hired as DC

We were 4 points away from a 1 vs 2 undefeated matchup in the sec title game against Georgia with BOB, Pete, and an injured Bryce Young. I really think we're going to be fine with these hires.
We’re likely to have a downgrade, possibly a serious one, at quarterback. And it’s not all that clear that we have upgraded either coordinator.

I haven't posted here in a very long time due to another member having issues with some opinions I offered. None the less, I have been checking in especially as relates to the Coordinator searches. As an avid fan for over 50 years I have been really curious as to all the get rid of BOB and Golding talk (not everyone but a bunch) and now that they are gone here we go with the CNS has lost his mind and Bama football is doomed. 2021 if Metchie and Winston play we curb stomp uga x2. 2022 we just did not have the players (WR, OL, and especially a Henry, Richardson, Harris type RB) to pound people but still were only 2 plays (really 1) away from the SECCG and likely the playoffs. I understand the displeasure with Golding at times, but I don't know what BOB could have done different. Yes he had a generational QB but what else?
All that said, I look forward to the reset and watching these young players take the reigns in 2023. Just one more thing, Bama has won a bunch of Championships without a generational QB but with a solid running game and a stout defense. That's what I'm hoping shows up next year. RTR

Good point. You simply cannot define a DC by the stats. You have to also examine the talent they had, who they played, what the offensive philosophy was and whether or not it complemented the defense or hurt it. I know Malzahn's offense could put a lot of strain on the defense at times and he ran hurry up all the time regardless how gassed the D was.

Let's play this game why don't we?

"Nick Saban is a terrible hire! I mean, it's okay he gave up 50 points to 1995 Nebraska, that was the greatest team of all-time, but he gave up EVEN MORE to 1996 Nebraska! In fact, Saban's defenses were SO BAD, just look at the numbers!! In his FIRST FOUR YEARS at Michigan State, Sparty wasn't even in the top 50 defenses back when only 100 were ranked! Nick Saban is a TERRIBLE HIRE! Even his best defense his last year gave up 52 points to Purdue and 40 to Wisconsin and got blown out!!"

Now I'm not by any means saying "Steele equals Saban" as only a fool would say that. But things happen, too. Sometimes the gap between 1 and 20 is 2 ppg.

Malzahn was the guy who licked the knife off before he put it back in the butter.

My biggest concern with Steele is his age. Hiring a 64 year old DC creates a couple of concerns. 1) How well can he communicate with and teach the young kids today? 2) is he going to be a guy who thinks too much about what worked in the past as opposed to what will work in the future? With both of these hires it appears Saban wants very much to go back to the style of football Alabama played 8-10 years ago. That was indeed a good time for Alabama football but the game is constantly changing. I think of an old saying used in the investment world that goes "Past performance is no guarantee of future results".

Serious questions:

1) How often in the course of CFB hires (any program) has the fanbase screamed for the head of the head coach or coordinator and gotten it - and actually gotten the REPLACEMENT they wanted?

2) How often has that replacement ACTUALLY been as good as folks thought he would be?

I can find threads on here where some of Saban's most vocal supporters NOW did not want him to set foot in BDS even if he was coaching the other team.

Florida getting Urban to replace Zook is one.
Us getting Saban is the most obvious one - but A LOT of folks here wanted Spurrier.
Ohio State when they got Tressel to replace "Big Game Pooper" Cooper
Jawja when Bowl Cut replaced Richt

But I can name WAY TOO MANY in the other direction.

LSU wanted Miles's head on a platter - and got Oregeron and his scandals.
Auburn wanted Gus gone - and got Harsin in his stead.

It doesn't work out like folks think it does far more often than it actually does work out.
