This hire ought tell everyone there is not a real long line of coaches who want to be a mannequin DC for Saban. You are either 1) young and unproven, 2) on the last go around of your career, or 3) in need of coaching rehab to be interested in DC role at Bama.

How do you feel about the hire Selma?
I prefer Steele to Grantham or Golding. I think he's at least a minimal upgrade.

The rest of it is "wait and see."

But this is where it reminds me a lot of when people want a harsh ruler removed in another country - who's your replacement? It's easy to scream "fire Golding" (and he needed to go, don't get me wrong), but it's another thing entirely to have a super upgrade.

My suspicion is that most of the "Pledge to Jump off the Ledge" here is rooted in the idea that Pruitt was coming here as the DC, which some folks tried to tell everyone wasn't going to happen.

I think we’re all overlooking the hire of the young kid…perhaps he’ll have a “fresh eyes” influence…
He’s supposed to be smart as a whip…a silent co-dc type deal to go with Steele?

Dunno if this has been mentioned yet but both Steele and Armstrong are linebacker coaches and only have experience coaching linebackers. Someone is gonna be learning on the job how to coach safeties

We completely whiffed with the DC search, plain and simple. If we don’t hire Pruitt as an analyst, then Saban has lost it…
The truth is that there is no way this would be anyone’s first choice. And this is what we get….. it is almost impossible to call this anything but “settling”. It appears Coach was simply unable to reel in his first, second or third choices. I’ll hope for the best, but my goodness…..

Wow. Two very underwhelming hires, especially since everyone felt these were so vital to “ restoring” the program. We all HOPE Rees is way better than BOB, but honestly his actual results at ND, against weaker competition were mixed.
You left out the "with weaker talent on his team" part.

Notre Dame is no longer the Lou Holtz-era powerhouse or the team that for a half century could simply say, "We want him and him" and get all those players.

I don't know how it's going to play, but we've gone from a Volkswagen with a spark plug missing to a Buick Skylark at least.

So you're saying he posted Golding-level numbers with 1/10th the talent Golding had?
Good point. You simply cannot define a DC by the stats. You have to also examine the talent they had, who they played, what the offensive philosophy was and whether or not it complemented the defense or hurt it. I know Malzahn's offense could put a lot of strain on the defense at times and he ran hurry up all the time regardless how gassed the D was.
