I'm old enough to remember when Auburn - two years after a national title mind you - had to fire Chizik. I mean, he just HAD TO GO! Nobody was worse than the Big Cheeze. And if you read their boards, two names were all over those board, Malzahn and Petrino. They get Gus and he catches lightning in a bottle and they damn near win the thing again.

Just two years later - and Malzahn's implosion was nowhere near the level of Chizik - they'd gotten what they wanted and they wanted a new toy to play with. Then they had that "we're almost there" year in 2017 and they got scared to death he was going to go to Arkansas and humiliate them. They agreed to a ridiculous contract - "the entire BOT was drunk when they wrote this" level - and thankfully they got what they wanted.

Gus didn't lose to Arkansas the rest of his time there.

He went 23-15, which included a 14-13 mark in the SEC, and they forked over $2.1 million for every win they got ..but at least they didn't lose to Arkansas.

Point being - you might get what you want and it might just barely be what you want.

Major Applewhite had one year AT RICE as an OC before here.

I'd say 3 at Notre Dame as an actual OC is more.
McElwain too now that I think about it.

Still been a bit since we've had a young and relatively inexperienced OC after having Kiffin, Sark, Daboll, Locksley, and O'Brien

You guys have to be kidding on the great recruiter… in his 30 years of recruiting he has been the principal recruiter on ONE 5 star kid and that was an OL, PH had 3 in the last 3 years. Guy hates to recruit. I can see him now pulling up to a recruits house getting a big drink of Metamucil and turning down the Lawrence Welk before he walks in the house. ONE top 10 defense in his career

There is just no satisfying some Bama fans. Am I blown away with these hires? No, but I never expected to be because I don't really know coordinator names like I know head coaches. Both feel like upgrades to me. Not going to take much to make me happy.

Our new OC just needs to call a smart game, something BOB never learned. No more 3 passes from shotgun on first and goal from the 5 please. DC, maybe spy mobile QBs from time to time would be a good start. Golding just thought the wind would slow them down. Maybe not start our DBs 10 yards off the WRs on every 3rd and 5 play. That's all I'm hoping for, put our players in the best possible positions to make the plays, something Golding and BOB failed to do more times then not, I don't care what the stats say.

We heard you the first few times. You don't like the hire. Thanks for making that clear.

BTW, clever handle.

Well, I wasn't expecting a homerun hire. So long as we didn't end up with Ted Roof or Mike Stoops, I think we will be ok. I'm just blown away at the percentage of the fan base that seems on the verge of rioting and/or jumping ship and not just over this hire, but over pretty much anything football related these last two seasons. People seem to forget that all this is nothing. The biggest hand wringing moment is yet to come. And that's when Saban retires, and that IS coming sooner and not later.

Saban....retiring.....we can just have our coordinators at that time pull a weekend at Berneys and make it look like Saban is still there. All the while Saban is watching from his boat on the lake.

Maybe by then we can get Bobby Beushe to play LB. We will never lose again.

Just a couple of thoughts: Schumann, while having ties to Alabama, probably sees his next stop as a head coach. Yes, coming back to Tuscaloosa to work for CNS would have been a "resume builder". But at this point, Schumann doesn't need to build his resume. He can take that next step while coaching at UGA. Leonhard supposedly turned Saban down when originally approached him after JP left to take the UT job. The guy is well respected and can have his pick on any number of college or NFL positions. Plus Leonhard is guaranteed $1 million from his Wisconsin contract for the next year. He is no hurry to make a decision. There was little question that JP was Saban's choice all along. However, it would mean clearing a bunch of hurdles that had little chance of succeeding. JP is going to need to go through reclamation process that many other went through in Saban's tenure. That first step is getting him on board as an analyst.

CNS went back to who he knew; Kevin Steele. Yes, Steele and CNS 'butted heads" a few times. But the bigger question is who hasn't butted heads with CNS while working for him? Personally I think Coach Saban likes those that challenge him (in a respectful way mind you). Pruitt, Lance Thompson, Steele among others were those that reportedly had issues with CNS at times but still made it back as re-hires. The only one that seems to be 'off the table" is Bo Davis, because lied to CNS. My personal opinion CNS can tolerate the differences is opinion from assistants. But he has to be able to trust you.

Steele is someone that CNS feels he can trust. The bonus is he knows what her getting., both good and bad. No this isn't the "home run" hire many of us wanted or expected. But there is little question that Kevin Steele wanted this job (mostly from folks that knew him around the Auburn program). And sometimes it better to hire the person that "wants it" than it is to hire the the one that will just "take it".

The goal I believe is to get JP back on the field at some point. Steele and JP know each other and if or when that happens, the transition could be a lot smoother. Plus you have both Armstrong and T-Rob on staff that have DC experience that could be groomed for the job as well.

I see this is a short term answer with hopefully a longer term plan.
