Looking around transfer portal stuff this morning. aTm is shedding 4 and 5* players and picking up 3* guys from the likes of Vandy, Purdue, Central Michigan and Youngstown St.
It’s a curious thing.

Elko is probably more comfortable with those guys at this point. It is what he is use to at Duke. Im thinking he will get a better buy in to the program with less heralded stars. Probably more competitive next year as well.

Massive human being 6-6, 350. Fits our current trend. Probably will play at least 2 more years of college ball.

He was a 3* out if high school, and hasn't played any on the college level yet. He does have size.

And? Seth McLaughlin and Jaeden Roberts were 3* star HS players . There is a reason the staff decided to go after him. Matter of fact , Roberts and Betrand have nearly identical 247 ratings.

OLine talent is probably the most difficult to scout. The fact that we are going after this dude tells me that the guy can play even though he hasn't yet.

This may be looked at as a crazy take - but I’m beginning to wonder if the only way to build quality roster depth is to take a fair amount of 3 star guys with a high ceiling and try to develop them into quality backups and maybe eventually starters. It’s becoming clear that most 4 star guys won’t sit long, let alone 5 star guys. I think some lower rated guys will stay longer and develop simply because they are appreciative to have the opportunity to be at a place like Alabama vs the entitlement mentality that comes with being <most> blue chip players.

Obviously, you still have to recruit all the blue chip you guys can, but I wonder if guys on the lower end of the blue chip spectrum won’t be replaced with some guys that are considered more of a project. Especially if they have a better attitude or even a better understanding of what their arc will be.
There are a few guys in this latest class that makes me wonder if that’s why they were signed. Raw guys that have a tremendous upside with some time.

I’ll say this - I think the teams that obviously recruit well, utilize the portal efficiently (meaning smartly and selectively - not trying to build a team for one championship year) and teams that are still able to keep a veteran core of quality roster guys will be the teams poised to stay elite consistently, year after year. TAMU is seeing right now that you throw a ton of money at a killer class, but if you can’t manage it correctly, it will fall apart as quickly as you got it. I feel like teams that over utilize the portal will end up hurting their recruiting. I think we’ll end up seeing some teams that will get stuck in perpetual cycle of getting a bunch of portal guys for 1 or 2 years and never having continuity. It won’t surprise me in the coming years to see some teams come out of left field and maybe even win it all some years, but immediately fall back to mediocrity.

It’s definitely going to be a wild ride seeing this new age play out.

I think that is a very reasonable take. It makes sense to me.

I think it was lack of play time that surprised me, more that the 3* rating. The coaches must have seen something they liked somewhere.

Will make development as important as recruiting. It will be like basketball: try to get a base of solid players who stick around, then plug in some hot shot transfers or recruits to try to push you over the edge for a championship

That is essentially what I was alluding to when I suggested that Saban's recruiting strategy may be changing based on the current state of affairs in the sport. Bring in a core of elite players, fill out the roster with guys who will take more time to develop, and plug holes in the roster with elite talent from the portal each year.

It requires great coaching because the elite players will flip every year, and the guts of the team will need to be developed.

A study should be done on how much money a program loses when a 4 or 5 star recruit transfers after one year. It has to be considerable. I'm talking about just expenses incurred from NIL and recruiting the player. This all seems way to one sided in favor of the players to me.

342 lbs? After Wolford and Ballou get done with him, he'll be down to 315 lbs. 😂
