Coach Saban is the gold standard for college football. From the moment Mal Moore landed with him and Miss Terry in Tuscaloosa, I was proud he was going to coach the University of Alabama. His process made athletes better players and so much more -- better human beings. Thanks to Coach, Miss Terry, and Saban family for so many amazing, honorable, winning years. You have spoiled us for anyone else. You've definitely earned your flip-flop and shorts time.

I have always heard everyday past 70yrs old is not a given. As I get closer to it, I agree. Coach needs to go see and experience some stuff he has avoided the last 50 years. That needs to be his job. I would not waste my time flying to do TV every fall weekend.

Was visiting my brother today when the story broke so I didn't find out right away. I must say I'm in shock. I thought only poor health or a poor recruiting class would make Saban call it quits. He was so close to Bryant's record too. In hindsight some indicators were there but I just didn't know how to interpret them, like Saban's purchase of the home in Florida, his response to recruits when they ask him if he'd be here 4 years, and finally Kevin Steele's retirement after only one season at Bama. Looks like Finebaum's sources were correct although Finebaum backed away from the story after we lost.

It's hard to say what the deciding factors were. It could have been the NIL, portal issues. The fact that coaches no longer have the control they once did over the players. The expansion of the playoff and additional round of games also make winning a championship a bit more of a crap shoot. I wish him well. He might end up on ESPN.

A very SAD day in the life of an OLD Alabama Crimson Tide fan. Actually, very STUNNED! I was not ready for this day.

Thank you Coach Saban for coming to Bama. Thanks for the memories. Thanks Miss Terry for being at the side of the GOAT at Bama. You won with CLASS and INTEGRITY.

Has ESPN already hired Coach to analyze what other Coaches and teams do?

Jumping in briefly as I just heard the news.

Which also means I haven't had the opportunity to review other posts...

I think, deep down inside, many of us saw this coming.

Especially in the last couple of years...

But particularly this year...

The "Saban rules" the NZAA has been implementing over this last decade or so, following the boat-racing of media darling Notre Dame, designed to neuter dominant defenses, and constrain building roster depth, along with out of control NIL, and laughably lax [~non-existent] transfer rules, were the catalyst.

Which, in turn, directly contributed to the imponderable nonsense at the start of this season, where the players chose the starting QB...

I'll never forget when CNS was being interviewed 5-6 years ago during the post-season, when Alabama hadn't made the playoff, and he shared how, as far back as he can remember, he had always been "part of a team".

And that being on a panel commenting on college football amounted to being "part of a team"...

The powers-that-be got what they wanted.

In the words of Teddy Nuge, "It's a free-for-all".

And I hope that, one day, the NZAA pays for their sins, of commission and omission...

Enjoy retirement, Coach.

And I hope you savor every moment of being part of a new team.

On whichever network that might be...

God knows you've earned it...

RTR

P.S. If you can't beat 'em, change the rules...

P.S. 2 Okay so, not as briefly as I originally thought... 😐
