are there any official sources that say lanning was actually offered the position?
What makes people think a head coach with a record of 95-49 who quit on one team after a year, got fired by two other teams, was showing up to work hungover at another and had to be immediately replaced is a better option? What since 2021 gives you the idea that Alabama would be successful with Dabo.
Furthermore, has anyone spoken to Kiffin or Sark? I dont think anyone really has any idea save Byrne and Sabanare there any official sources that say lanning was actually offered the position?
You are assuming that Dabo would change his stance on the transfer portal when he is still the only hold out. So I think 3 years of not watching it and after they kicked him out of town with Byrne would be short enough of a period of not watching as much.I've coached travel baseball for almost ten years, and as you probably know or "heard", it is HIGHLY competitive and cut throat. One thing I've learned and have made a saying out of it (that I use often) is "Winning covers over a multitude of sins".
I get the angst and the disdain for Dabo, but I wonder if the hire was made and the guy came in, got a hold of the talent at Bama, and began hammering out conference championships and playoff final appearances, how long would you "not watch as much"?
Not panicSo if there's no Lanning, and we won't suck it up and hire Kiffin, then what in the world do we do?
Again… how do you have so much confidence in a guy that refuses to use the transfer portal? If this was 5-6 years ago then I probably would hate the hire on a personal level but could understand it on a football level. However this is now a guy that finds a way to lose 3-4 games a year in the ACC because of his resistance to change. What makes people think a head coach with a record of 95-49 who quit on one team after a year, got fired by two other teams, was showing up to work hungover at another and had to be immediately replaced is a better option?
In a perfect world Smart played at Alabama and Saban can talk him into returning. That won't happen though. In a still pretty good world, Phil Knight graduated from Alabama and he'd throw what ever amount of money it takes Lanning to leave. That doesn't seem like it will happen.
One thing we know for sure about Dabo. If you give him the staff and give him the talent he can win championships, plural. Well, he'd have the talent at Alabama that's for sure. Of the other remaining names, who else can we say that about?
He's not the first name on my list either, but how did Kiffin get to the front of the list?
Dabo would be the absolute worst hire we could make. The problem is with the way things work now, you could have a lot of talent out the door before you hire a coach. Of course you make the wrong hire, by the time you've made a switch all the Saban talent is gone.
I was for Spurrier last time around, which apparently Alabama could have had. They almost had Rich Rod though, which was far worse, but they got Saban who was far better (though Spurrier probably could have won a couple titles at Alabama before he hung it up, he had South Carolina playing good football).
After Lanning... of the realistic possibilities, I'm leaning Dabo. I was enthused about Lanning, Kiffin and Sark have coached so long with fairly limited success, I don't know if they'd Pete Golding Alabama or not.
Dabo is the Spurrier hire to me. If Kiffin the next Saban? Is Sark? Their resumes don't look like Saban's did at that point in their career, that's for sure.
Dabo looks a bit too much like Bobby Bowden to write him off. In 1981 Bowden went 6-5, he was also 60 at that point, old enough to raise some questions. So, Alabama doesn't make an obvious move in adding a highly qualified Alabama guy.
We will see though...
Edit: I will add this though, if Alabama interviews Dabo the line of questioning would have to be how he'd adapt to the portal and NIL. I think people underestimate how poorly positioned Clemson is to compete with NIL, they're not a blueblood. But Dabo would have to have a plan if he came to Alabama...
We had conversations about Clemson and NIL years ago didn't we? And I said that Clemson didn't have the financial support to hang with the top programs. You are assuming that Dabo would change his stance on the transfer portal when he is still the only hold out. So I think 3 years of not watching it and after they kicked him out of town with Byrne would be short enough of a period of not watching as much.
The level of hyperbole in that statement. And I'd counter with his resume looks a lot like Bobby Bowden, and geniuses decided not to hire him either.Dabo would be the absolute worst hire we could make.
Regardless of that, I'm just asking if the guy was hired, and starting winning "Bama style" would you still stay away? You are assuming that Dabo would change his stance on the transfer portal when he is still the only hold out. So I think 3 years of not watching it and after they kicked him out of town with Byrne would be short enough of a period of not watching as much.
NIL is only one component and the transfer portal is another. Dabo refuses to use half of the necessary resources that everyone else uses to build competitive programs. Have you actually looked at the teams in the ACC? How is he losing to them and what do you seriously think that translates to when he has to play a SEC schedule? We had conversations about Clemson and NIL years ago didn't we? And I said that Clemson didn't have the financial support to hang with the top programs.
It's not all on Dabo! Clemson isn't that rich, they can't pay with the top programs, I was the one saying Clemson was due for a fall was I not? We've had these discussions.
Of course if you bring Dabo in for an interview you have to get a clear understand of how he'll use the portal and NIL effectively. But, he'd be far, far better positioned at Alabama!
What's nuts is there were "confirmations" reported last night that Lanning was in Tuscaloosa and now I'm reading he never was, LOL!are there any official sources that say lanning was actually offered the position?
I would think any offer could require some assurances from Dabo if he was the successful candidate of what he would do and how to utilize the portal and NIL to make the team better and sustain success...Regardless of that, I'm just asking if the guy was hired, and starting winning "Bama style" would you still stay away?
That wasn't a post of panic. Just a genuine question. I do not know if I even have a wish list after Kiffin. That was the list for me. There aren't many appealing names left that aren't already spoken for, but I'd love to hear some ideas. I'm not panicked bc we have the best hiring AD in the country. Not panic
I could name 100 worse hires, literally.Dabo would be the absolute worst hire we could make.
Dabo wouldn’t be “Bama style” simply because he doesn’t maximize his chances of winning a championship. Unless you believe that all of the sudden he is going to change his stance on the portal then I don’t see how a Bama style would ever come to be under Dabo.Regardless of that, I'm just asking if the guy was hired, and starting winning "Bama style" would you still stay away?
$20,000,000 is nothing, a New York Senator became famous for her line about disregarding all those zero's. They were nothing...20 million is nothing really. Yeah it’s something for us but we are talking about rich entities.
Lanning will come down to whether he wants to come and Alabama wants him.
I have a feeling that Alabama already has their man and is going to give Saban a victory lap and announce either Friday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.
The rumor mill is very active...............good thing we didnt have the internet before the invasion of NormandyWhat's nuts is there were "confirmations" reported last night that Lanning was in Tuscaloosa and now I'm reading he never was, LOL!
Also he was seen eating at Chuck’s Fish lolWhat's nuts is there were "confirmations" reported last night that Lanning was in Tuscaloosa and now I'm reading he never was, LOL!
