CBB doesn't work that way because the NCAAT is so wild and unpredictable from year to year.

Coach K, Roy Williams, Self, Izzo, Knight, Calhoun etc etc.... some of the best to ever do it couldn't make the Elite 8 or Better every year.

No matter how great a coach is or how great their team is they will inevitably get bounced early from time to time in the Round of 32 or Sweet 16.

I know, and it’s because the tournament sucks. There‘s way too many teams.

I think some fans (not me in this context) are just beyond frustrated with Bama not getting past the Sweet 16 with a team that should get past the Sweet 16.

This is probably especially true with casual Bama BB fans who primarily follow the Football program and hold the BB program to that standard.

So it’s like…

‘Oh the BB team made the Sweet 16 and then lost? So what get back to me when then make the Elite 8’

‘Oh they were the #1Overseed but couldn’t make the Final Four? So What’

‘They just made the HC Top 5 in Salary? What has he done to earn that?’

That just shows me they don’t understand how volatile and chaotic the NCAAT is to navigate.

They don’t understand how much we’ve had to sweat even making the NCAAT in the past.

Now we have a guy who gets us in no sweat every season and has won TWO SEC Double Championships in the 1st 5 Years and got us to #1 in the Polls and a #1 Overall Seed.

This is by far the best shape the program has been since the 80’s.

Heck yes pay to keep him.

Imo being objective he’s not a Top 5 HC yet, but for me I see this as a long term investment because he shows the potential to be a Top 5 HC so you better lock him down so he does it here and not Kentucky.

And within those recruiting classes, he's also beaten out blue bloods for recruits multiple times. That's not something that should be taken for granted. This isn't football. I'm not sure there are more than 5 other coaches who would have us doing that. Given all the talent he is bringing in, it's only a matter of time before he has us going further than the Sweet 16.

The NCAA tourney is a tough deal. Sometimes it will take great coaches a few years before they start having major success in the tournament, but once they make it over the hump the first time, they start going deep in the tourney frequently.

This guy's an absolute stud. If we didn't lock him down as a top 5 coach, I believe we would come to regret it a few years down the line.

The academic goals (whatever they are) aren't paying much at $25,000 when compared to the rest.

Meeting certain academic standards, including an 85% graduation rate, and an NCAA-approved APR score, can earn Oats another $25,000.

The steep drop-off in the buyout may be an additional way to get a coach to sign with confidence that a good job in the next couple of years will lead to re-negotiations for more money. (I'm guessing the buyout for year 4 is $4 million... )

If another school hires Oats away from Alabama in the first two years of the contract, it will owe Alabama $18 million. Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne said he believed that’s the highest such buyout in the country.

The buyout due to Alabama drops to $10 million for the third season of the contract, $4 million in the third, before zeroing out for the final two years. The new deal went into effect on March 15.

You know, with the academic goals, how does a coach even begin to address that specifically in regards to graduation rates? Doesn’t all the transferring affect that score?

Only on rare occasions do I comment on these pages but some of these negative comments about coach Nate Oats are not warranted and degrade what is actually happening at Bama. Nate Oats is the best coach Bama has had in a long time if not ever and the program's relevance has soared from nothing to fairly respectable nationally. So, in 2024 Bama is a four seed at the Big Dance and we consider the season a disappointment? This fan base has become spoiled quickly and will live to regret it. This new contract seems fair but not excessive and I am hoping it is enough to keep a big dog like Kentucky away when they need another coach. We need to appreciate this guy for what he is, which is a damn fine basketball coach and stop gripping.
