Word was that he looked slightly better in a lot of the scrimmages last year. He also looked slightly better during this year's A Day, and some have said significantly better during the final scrimmage before A Day. Simpson has looked slightly better than Milroe just about every time they've had a scrimmage or A Day, but apparently simply being slightly better is not enough, even if it happens every time. What's it gonna take for this man to get his shot? Because it seems like he's held to a much higher standard than Milroe is.

Good question and that's up to the coaching staff. If the new staff also designates Milroe as the starter, that will be two that believe he's the best we have.

Keep in mind they are around the players when we're not and maybe Ty struggles in practice? Couldn't say.

Yes, Saban flat out said that the team chose Milroe. He also floated it out there, because he couldn't say it explicitly, that he needed Simpson to be so good that there could be no question about it. In other words, Simpson couldn't just be a little bit better and it be the coaches call - he had to be so much better that the decision couldn't be questioned by the team. The phrase he used was something like "Be so much better than the next guy that I have no choice but to start you."

This is where I was most of last season - watching our WRs do so many things right, but not getting the ball thrown their way. I really think that Burton deserved to be a highly rated draft prospect, and that other WRs from the 23 squad had the capability to be talked about as pre-season all-americans, but they simply didn't get the ball despite doing exactly what they were required to do and being open really, really often.

This is not to suggest that Milroe is a bad quarterback or that Ty and the others are better options, but I’m getting the feeling that Milroe is far more Kelly Bryant than Jayden Daniels. If I’m wrong then I would be happy because it would be a great story but based on what has actually been revealed I don’t see the fall being much different at this point.

Just FWIW… This was the first time Ty actually looked great to me. So before someone calls me a Ty fan I’m far from an advocate or supporter of team Ty.



I think CKD will chose the best distributor of the short and intermediate passes. I really think his goal was to survive the spring and deal with the roster in the fall. I think it’s clear that it will either be Milroe or Simpson at this point.

To add to your point, this is the same JM who said he didn't need to "practice" running.

I remember when he said that (it was when one of the TV crews interviewed him before a game and then they shared his comment during a game IIRC) and I remember thinking: "you can't run the RPO" and "you get tackled by your shoestrings way too much running laterally" and "you have terrible footwork in the pocket" and "you sometimes have a hole the size of a truck in front of you, but you won't run (and stubbornly try to pass the pass)" but you think you don't need to "practice" running.

IMO he struggles with self-awareness which impacts his game-awareness!

He sees himself as a "passing QB" when in fact his best strength is he's more of a "running QB" (who really needs to work more at that part of his game).

Yet, he thinks he's a "passing QB" but that is severely challenged by the "results."

Every facet of QB play other than "throwing it deep" is a weakness of his. From presnap, to postsnap reads to short and intermediate throws in the flats or across the middle...he struggles mightily with it all!

Which begs the question after 4 years??? Why do you still look like a freshman QB straight out of HS??? Why haven't these things improved?

It's like a point guard who's never learned how to dribble to his left OR a batter who can't hit a curve ball. If a QB can't do basic QB things by the time they are 4 years out of HS on the major college level it probably means they can't/won't ever be able to do them.

Occam’s Razor: the simplest explanation is usually the correct one. In other words, he’s not a QB.

Burton's immature antics were always going to be knock on him with NFL scouts, but the lack of tape is hurting him now.

First and foremost, I think Bonds was gone even if we were bringing in Tom Brady as quarterback and CNS stayed, but its hard to dispute the issues we have seen in recruiting and Nihlblck's departure as anything but an indictment on Milroe's shortcomings reading defenses. Receivers want the ball and this group of receivers arent as fiercely loyal to Milroe as last year's group. Heck I know 2 who came to Alabama with the assumption that Ty Simpson was going to be the starter in 23 and 24 through talking to their parents. I think reading Milroe's body language the past 2 weeks maybe a clue that he isnt getting the "you are the starter after the spring" kinda endorsement like what has been widely speculated.

It's why the "hero" of the IB's "4th an 31" left for UTA.

That's hard to swallow. You are forever going to be in a famous Bama painting....a Bama hero...but at first chance you bail explaining you wanted to play for a team who had a better QB.

When JM does come out for the draft the criticism will be unmerciful. The NFL tears it's prospects apart.

CKD cannot afford to give the starting job to anyone but the best candidate. Things can go off the rails very fast at a football crazed school like Bama. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and he knows it. I doubt he gives the job to the second best guy because the offensive line likes him better.

CNS's NFL philosophy has limited our ability to develop an adequate backup who would be our future QB. When your only experience is against Mercer and Western Carolina, and mop up duty that is limited to handing the ball off and running out the clock, does nothing for the future. Like most things in life, experience is the best teacher.

A review of last year with JM at QB:

Opening game he looks like a vastly improved QB. In hindsight, he was always good against inferior opponents; especially those who couldn't cover us deep. Remember what his favorite pass is???

UT comes to Bama for the biggest game of the 23 season: Can't win the big one.

USF: do we need to even discuss this nightmare?

Middle of the season: we are winning games with a sheer talent advantage (as a lot of CNS teams did). We are barely scraping by with wins against Arkansas and TAMU and then we lose to UTK for the first times since most teenagers in Alabama had been born. Our QB play is so bad we head into the bye week before LSU at a cross-roads with the staff knowing what barely works against the middle of the SEC won't sustain us.

LSU: Ah, good old Tommy Reese changes up the offense by taking RPO reads away from JM (yet we still ran those plays but told JM what to do instead of him executing the "read") and designed more simple passing concepts to smaller segments of the field (to help Jalen make quicker decisions) and we intentionally designed some QB runs for him and we look like world-beaters against LSU!!!

Going into KY (a pretty good team record wise) we destroy them and we "think" these are on the rise. UTC is a cupcake and then....

How do we explain how a bad Auburn team had us beat with one play to go??? Maybe it's just the Barn being the Barn? Or so we tell ourselves.

Then Georgia. There's only one explanation (well, maybe two). First one is: "a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then" and our OL puts together an amazing game and we look pretty impressive. But (reason 2) we are amazed at how CKS decided to not pressure JM and let him have what he wants/needs: "time" in the pocket to make decisions.

UM: the best defense in college football will not make the same mistake Auburn did on 4th and 31 or that Kirby did in the SEC championship game.

In our 5 biggest games of the year: UTA, UTK, LSU, Barn and UM, we only win 1 of them handily, we need a stroke of luck to win the IB, we need Kirby to pull the biggest plunder of his young career and we struggle mightily in losses to UTA and UM.

Outside of the 1 big win against LSU: all the other teams figured us out on offense.

JM really didn't get better. He got a mid season shake up from his OC that let him shine until UM figured out what was going on and shut him down.

All this talk about JM "getting better" but what we've seen (A-day) and heard (eye witnesses to other closed scrimmages) and Jalen is basically the same QB he's been all along.

Mac was fortunate to play 2 SEC games and 1 game against a B1G opponent before taking over as full time starter. But even in those games he showed defenses that they had to treat him like a dangerous passer or else they would get lit up.

Milroe has yet to earn that type of respect from defenses.

I agree. I'd like to think that if CNS was still coaching he would realize the need to change this tendency (along with using TO at the end of the 1st half instead of acting like if he did he was coughing up cash to do so).

In today's 1 and done culture, we can't afford not to develop some QB depth. CNS liked to destroy a team's morale by getting the big lead and then by the middle of the 3rd quarter put in subs and basically bleed the clock. He never wanted to allow his subs to "run up the score" (although Tua was pretty awesome at that).

I know not running up the score was a part of the older coaching code, but today I think you have to understand that you need to allow the subs to play with a big lead just like if the score was 0-0.

Hope we see this more with CKD!

we beat tennessee last year. we lost to them with bryce at qb the previous year
