Note that the "relationship" started when girl was 12 and it went on for 5 years. So it would have been illegal even when the serial assault ended when she was 17.

Why were the police not called when it was discovered?! This is such a huge part of the problem. If churches have something like this happen just do the right thing and contact law enforcement and then cooperate fully and treat the offender like they have airborne Ebola. Then support the victim by loving them and helping get them counseling or whatever help they need. The world is a bad place and terrible people wind up in churches, schools, the medical industry, and other places where vulnerable people are. Still, if you nail these people to the wall and not cover it up it helps protect the victims and the organization.

We have dealt with the sexual assault of a minor twice in the years I have been a part of the church. It was a volunteer both times. We called the police and banned the offenders. Both were arrested and convicted. We also had a pastor who had an affair with a married woman in the church. He was fired immediately when it came out. Some churches handle things right. You don't generally hear about those. You hear about the horror stories and I understand why.

yes a 12 year old was molested for years, in the 1980's and it is just coming to light now because the gross evangelical bastards handled in house and forgave themselves for it.

if you read the article it states that it started when she was 12 in 1982 and ended in 1987, so when she was 17 because someone told on him. She in fact calls that out specifically that he didn't stop on his own or turn himself in, he got caught.
