The whole system is a mess, but the scenarios like this 8 million deal will backfire. They will have a lack of depth and talent in key areas. I think it's the same for Ole Miss, they're embarrassing themselves not investing enough on high school recruiting.

I have to say that I line Alabama style and plans for allocations of costs. 1. We already had a headstart by being the most talented team before the wild wild West. 2. When you have home grown high school recruited stars their money starts smaller and after proof of value being embedded in the community, the larger chunks of money can come from real NIL endorsements and other University partnerships that create revenue like LANK. 3. Find value transfers that fill a need and haven't gotten opportunities or proven talent like Green that's looking for a bigger platform.

I feel like Bama has filled it's needs and the only crazy thing they've done is potentially overpay Mbakwe who may at best be 3rd best corner or receiver on whatever side of the ball. Maybe they didn't overpay, and I definitely like the guy.... So whatever.
Hopefully lank goes away after this season and we never have to hear that crap again with yea Alabama taking over.

Ok, let me make sure I understand what you're saying. I'm 44 years old. I absolutely HATE what NIL has done to college football and what LANK has done to Alabama specifically. Does that make me a "grumpy old man"? Seriously...
I'm only saying if gtgilbert was compared to a grumpy old man for hating NIL, then there's a heck of a lot of grumpy old men out there. But there's no age restriction.

“Grumpy” and “Old” are both relative terms.
I’m assuming the poster of the “grumpy old man” statement is either a yungen' and somehow tied to the LANK crowd either financially or emotionally.

And I suppose I qualify more than you since I have you by 22 years. 🤣

In the late 80’s-early 90’s, coaches, training staff, athletic staff, couldn’t give a player a ride across campus. “It was considered an extra benefit not covered in the provisions of your scholarship.” Now you just hop into your NIL Lambo, and roll out. I think the players need to compensated but it should be through revenue sharing and limits on amount should be mandated by the NCAA. This Wild West crap going on now is ruining college sports. (If it hasn’t already happened).

Friend of mine was an asst. coach for a college soccer program back in the 90's.

Practice had to be cancelled because of lightning, so he gave a couple players a ride home because they either walked or biked.

When the head coach found out, the athletic department submitted a notice of possible impermissible benefits for the ride.

Idk whether it actually amounted to an infraction, but the fact that the athletic department thought they needed to report it shows how absurdly tightly things were controlled back then as opposed to now.

I know I've had my gripes with the NCAA over the years, but I don't think they come even close to having the power to do what you suggest, either under existing court decisions or decisions in the future, when you examine the judicial trends. Saban has mentioned federal legislation in the past and he's probably correct. Maybe that's one thing Congress could agree on...

That's correct and we've reported similar ticky-tack things in the past. It was ridiculous and was part of the downfall of the NCAA, IMO - lack of common sense...

Apparently, according the the NCAA, it would have been a better decision to let them all get blown away by lightning than give them a ride.

I'll confess to old.

Only occasionally and mildly grumpy, but it's been a great few weeks!!!

Don't hate NIL. Players put in enough work to get more than just the scholarship. It needs more structure to avoid this free agency BS for sure though.

I do hate lank and what that's done to Alabama because it's far and above any of the normal NIL crap. Optimistic that we move past that and to whatever structure yea alabama puts in place for the players.

IIRC in 1986 when Willie Ryles suffered a stroke in fall practices and later passed away near the end of August. Alabama was playing Ohio State in the Kickoff Classic at the Meadowlands in New Jersey.

After the game, Perkins flew the team from New Jersey to Columbus, GA so they could attend Willie Ryles funeral.

Alabama had to report it as an “NCAA violation” because the return flight wasn’t directly back to Birmingham/Tuscaloosa. One of the most ridiculous things I had ever heard in my life.

I remember that and the stupidity on the part of the NCAA. I do believe hearing something to the effect that some of the players did not have adequate clothes to wear to the funeral so Bama funded some. That was considered a violation -- could have been another funeral or event...those days are fuzzy in my mind.
