No they were not. Not even close. Having Ryan Anderson, Arnold, Key, Downs, and Kool Aid last year in a defense that they were recruited to run is a far better defense instantly than starting a bunch of freshmen in a defense that they weren’t recruited to run. Yes we got better as the year went on but no we were nowhere near last year’s defense. Hell we gave up nearly 200 yards rushing in a half vs Oklahoma… that was a November game. When do you remember last year’s defense ever producing numbers like that?
talent was much better last year , and I know you meant Turner instead of Anderson, but this defense had better numbers . Just imagine would CKW could have done if he had those guys?
Schematically , the defense isn’t much different than last year. A 3-4 Nickle is about the same as a 4-2-5, with the main difference in gap control at the LOS and how they line up against the Olinemen. also the nomenclature is different, but no one On the field , no one cares if their position is called Bandit or DE or Sam or Wolf or Star or Money or whatever.

it would have made no difference.

When the guy who touches the ball on every snap is playing one of the worst games of his life, you're dead in the water regardless as to what you call.
True, but at least he would have attempted to make some adjustments..........Sheridan was locked into safe mode.

Fumble-roe just couldnt stop tripping over his own feet

The morning after I feel a bit better, I still believe in DeBoer even after an incredibly disappointing season. I’ll really be able to judge him after he has a full season with a QB that fits his offense. I do think he needs to work on holding his players more accountable though, seeing signs that the players are running the team more than the coach is, but that’s the case with most of the sport. Defensively going forward I think we’ll be okay, run defense needs to be a focus though, got gashed quite a bit during the season.

Milroe, god bless him but the pairing is not working, like I said yesterday, either leave for the draft or enter the portal, maybe he goes somewhere magically turns into a consistently good passer like Hurts did but Alabama can’t waste another season trying to figure that out.

I think Bama should try to hire Michigans defensive line coach. They shed blocks well as Milroe tried to run out of the pocket

I don’t have time for this. You clearly haven’t been paying attention if you think Ty can’t play.

And the reason I lost respect for Saban is because he let the players choose the QB.
Saban’s ALWAYS did that. He talked openly and publicly and often about it from early in his tenure. I have trouble believing that some of you don’t remember that. You aren’t the only one. Again, Saban always did it - I remember specifically from the McCarron/ Philip Simms battle that didn’t end until the 2nd or 3rd game of the season. “Whoever wins the team.”

Btw, Milroe had the same problems with USF this year that Buchner and Ty had last year. Their scheme and attitude just seems to give Alabama trouble.

That interception yesterday was just like the one he threw against Texas the second game of season in 2023. He never saw the coverage and predetermined his throw. Truthfully, JM telegraphed most every throw yesterday. If Michigan would have been at full strength on defense, it is likely he would thrown a couple more.

A notion of actual “progression” by JM from start of 2023 until now is purely an illusion.

I cannot tell you why CNS hired Marrone, but I think CNS saw in Milroe what he saw in Jalen Hurts. A very talented, athletic QB who depended on running rather than passing and in both cases it worked at the high school level. If you remember Hurts first two years he was a run first QB who had problems reading defenses. At that point he was not much different than Milroe. Then when CNS hiresd Kiffin and later Sarkisian Hurts developed the skills to make it in the NFL. Milroe did not have the luxury of that kind of tutelage and never developed beyond his high school skill set. I am not defending his other actions, or saying he would have been a much better QB, but he was shortchanged in developing his QB skills.
I've said this 100 times, but why not. Hurts, on his first day as a starter as a true freshman, was significantly better than Nilroe RIGHT NOW - and it's not even really close.

Also have said this a bunch. JM wasn't a guy we really went after. We missed on all the QBs we really wanted that year and he was the best we could get to flip. Once he was here we tried to get him to transfer or switch positions. He should have done one of those, but refused.

As for QB skills - that is on him to develop a lot in the off-season. He's hired different QB coaches since he was a freshman in HS, and still is what he is.

He hit his ceiling and can go no farther

I probably would have benched him for that sissy attempt
I would have benched him ages ago.

Even if I had a verbal agreement with him over the Lank stuff I feel like you have to make a change during the Tenn game for Milroe failing to be a credit to the team and actively hurting everyone around him.

But after that OU play he should have not only lost his QB1 job... he should have lost the 'C' on his jersey.

I'm close to saying kick him off the team for it.

But being real if you bench him and take that 'C' he'd have an emotional temper tantrum over it to the point you could dismiss him for that reaction alone.

I'm not really cool with so many just giving CKD a mulligan for this season like he HAD to play MIlroe and take all the losses no matter what.

I mean no he didn't.

Maybe he benches him and 5-6 other guys quit and portal out...

So what?

We lost 4 games and missed the playoffs anyway.

Why not play the guys who really care about the team more than just themselves?

You might end up with a better record or you might not but it would be running things the right way and setting the team up for a better chance in 2025.

9-4 without context is not a terrible season in isolation.

But the way it went down...he gets no mulligan from me.

CKD's grade for this season is an F.... just a complete Failure.

I think Michigan got more turnovers against us yesterday than they did all season. Just pathetic.
