The average price of a dozen large, grade-A eggs was $4.15 in December 2024, up 14% from $3.65 in November, federal data shows. That's a more than 60% increase from the $2.51 it cost a year ago and 160% more than the $1.41 consumers paid for the same carton in 2019, CBS News' price tracker reveals.

By comparison, the overall monthly rate of inflation for food in December was 2.5%, with the cost of food at home rising just 0.3%, according to the latest Consumer Price Index data.

Why are egg prices soaring?
Behind rising egg prices and shortages is a strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), known as H5N1, that killed 13.2 million commercial egg-laying hens in the month of December alone and continues to depopulate flocks into 2025, according to the USDA. Outbreaks of H5N1 were first detected in the U.S. in 2022 and are considered to be the main driver behind the years-long volatility in egg prices.

Carry on, @Huckleberry ........

@Bazza, I have absolutely no problem admitting that Trump has little control over the price of eggs. However, Republicans had no hesitation at all when it came to blaming Biden for the same thing. However, It is nice to see that Trump is inheriting a low inflation rate. I look forward to seeing the lower prices he promised.

And I wish the Trump White House was at honest as you:

White House says egg prices are high due to Biden admin’s orders to kill over 100M chickens

A bit of rational thought from a libertarian source:

Like Biden, Trump Does Not Control the Price of Eggs
Though he promised to lower costs on Day 1, Trump remains just as beholden to the laws of supply and demand as his predecessor.

OK thanks, @Huckleberry

Let's at least put this in some perspective here, BOTH parties are awash in big pharma money.

Correct, which is why RFK can't really count on either party. Dems are gonna Dem; that's not important right now. The GOP people who sold out are all looking to get primaried soon. The movement is already underway and since most people in Congress don't come across as particularly bright, I think a lot of them are going to be dumbfounded at the pushback.

To what movement do you refer? There are so many these days. Is it an anti-vaccine movement or an anti-lobbying/big money movement?

The primary movement. Scott Pressler has already started and monies are already being donated.
Presler is a Qanon believer and election denying imbecile. I’d be wary of any movement he’s a part of or anyone who finds him credible. Is the movement an effort to primary people who took lobbying money in general or just those who took money from vaccine manufacturers?

Say what you want, Pressler is one of the hardest working campaigners I've ever seen. Much of Trumps success in PA is due, in part, to Scott's hard work up there. His personal beliefs aren't particularly relevant when he's getting results like this.

The movement doesn't seem particularly based on money lobbying alone. I think it's more or less a movement to remove people who impede what the voters voted for. RFK backing Trump absolutely helped Trump win. The issues that Trump ran on are many; the MAHA movement only being one of them, but I'm guessing to the Trump voter, all that really matters is that Trump wants this guy.

I, on the other hand, do not feel that way. The fact that Trump is backing people like Kennedy, Gabbard and Patel means nothing. The fact that they might be able to clean up some of the worst elements of the federal government means everything. Call them disruptors or whatever you want; we need people who are willing to kick the stool out from under the status quo. We've needed that for decades now.

Would Trump have let the sick chickens live to spread the flu? Considering his pro-disease HHS nominee, the answer is probably yes.
Of course not, but that's not the point. Had Harris won, the situation would be the same. The only thing different is that far less people would be talking about it.
