Where the land meets the sky
As many of the old-time members know, my wife and I have been teacher's on the Navajo Reservation since graduating from FSU in 98. My wife is Navajo/Lakota and we pulled up stakes from Tallahassee and moved west after I got my Masters. As our daughter gets older into HS we decided that she needs better options for her life to further her education and I'm tired of Sand and Snow in Northern Arizona. We both recently landed new jobs at the same school in Gulfport, MS. and in a sense I'm returning home. I'm originally from Mobile and grew up a good part of my life in Selma, Alabama. It's going to be a big change and we feel equal to the challenge. I'm looking forward to the return.

It must have been a great life experience in Arizona. I have only been through Navajo country twice in my life and have some small understanding of the challenges you faced and contributions you made there.

This is a pretty big event in your life! Not a bad thing - as I read your circumstances - at your age you & your family should do just fine with the change and new challenges!

I've been to Gulfport - sometime around 24 years ago to help a friend who had a side business selling motorcycle goods at various bike events. He flew me there while he and his wife drove with their truck filled with their tent and merch. I thought is was OK but that's a small sample size.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Congrats / best wishes on the move! Next time I'm down at the Gulf, I'll now make sure we finally get together. Here's hoping the move goes smoothly and you're embraced by the community and the school!

Best part of Gulfport, for me, was Ship Island.

My girlfriend and I enjoyed the boat ride and the all day excursion. Made a number of trips back in the day.

That was 50 years ago, so I don't have a clue what's going on there now. Still might be worth checking out. ..:)

Fairhope, Alabama
Welcome back home…..we’ll almost be neighbors…..by just under 100 miles 😁

I did a stint in Ocean Springs after graduating from Bama in ‘93…..but I’ve been here in Fairhope since ’95

I was also born in Mobile…..then to Birmingham…..then to Nashville…..then back to Birmingham…..then to Tuscaloosa…..then to Ocean Springs…..and I’ve lived in Fairhope longer than I’ve lived in any one place prior to this.

good luck with the life shift…..I hope you find it peaceful, fulfilling and soul-nurturing

Just in time for the summer humidity. Welcome back to the South!
An ocean breeze can often soothe even the hottest of days on the Gulf Coast. :)

Humidity in the Southeast is nothing compared over 100 degrees in Vegas or Phoenix! And that's at night!
I recall my first trip to Vegas. Temp was reported as 114°. Wasn't uncomfortable to just sit there by the pool. The small trees closest to the pool made it smell like a dry sauna. I was thinking they could combust at anytime.

I also recall stepping off a bus at a venue in Phoenix one summer day. I remember standing on the concrete parking lot thinking, "I don't think I have stood in a hotter spot in my entire life." Needless to say, it didn't take me very long to move to another "spot." :)

Fortunately, the human body has an amazing ability to acclimate to its surroundings.
