Ah, Florida - words fail me II

For me, the sub rolls at Publix are too hard.

I get my subs at a family run business here called "Big Joe's Subs".

I will grab a box of the Publix wings once in a while. And their chicken tenders are amazing!

Otherwise I prefer to do my food shopping elsewhere.

Hey, when I was in college I traded in enough green stamps to buy a tennis racket! :)
Publix fried chicken is really good, and their tenders are amazing. Best tenders around IMO, and they are still large tenders as well. Somehow, Publix has avoided the chicken tender shrinkage that has plagued every other tender place since COVID. I wonder why that is? Maybe Publix is not as concerned with ripping off its customers.

Publix fried chicken is great and also still affordable.

We were in Deland back in 2009, buying orchids at Power Plant and the girls decided to visit the Emus...ha ha.....funny how they decided to quickly retreat when they perceived a threat. Don't know that they had ever "met" an Emu before today. Obviously they were impressed!!!

Treasure Island Police Department’s Community Service Crew was on routine beach patrol today when they spotted something unusual half-buried in the sand—a dark lump that suddenly... blinked!

Turns out it was a cold-stunned sea turtle! The little guy (or gal) appeared to have washed up during high tide, hit by the sudden chill, and was too weak to move. In a desperate attempt to stay warm, it tried to bury itself in the sand—but only managed to poke its head out to let itself be known.

TIPD’s team acted quickly, took photos, called the experts at Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA), and kept watch until the rescue team arrived with blankets and a large recovery tote. They gently scooped up our chilly friend, wrapped it in a cozy blanket, and whisked it off for warm-water rehab and some well-deserved TLC.

CMA thanked the TIPD Team, telling them their actions helped save the turtle’s life.

Another day, another way our team protects Treasure Island—whether it's people, property... or precious sea creatures!

‘Black’ banned from flyers for FAMU College of Law Black History Month event, student says

School says policy in line with state law

For the past several years, Florida’s 12 public universities have been prohibited from using state or federal funds for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs, following legislation signed by the governor and reinforced by the State Board of Governors.

Now, a Florida A&M University law student says those restrictions are having a direct impact on student organizations even during Black History Month.

Aaliyah Steward says she is in her final year at Florida A&M University College of Law, and she has encountered obstacles while trying to promote Black History Month events for the Black Law Students Association.

According to Steward, certain words were flagged during the approval process for event flyers.

“It was ‘black,’ ‘affirmative action,’ and ‘women’ as well,” Steward said.

Exodus: The Largest Wealth Flight in American History

From 2020 to 2024, Americans worth over 500 billion relocated between states, fleeing high-tax jurisdictions for states with lower taxes and more economic freedom. Florida, Texas, and Nevada emerged as the top destinations while California, New York, and Illinois experienced the largest outflows.

Between at least 3-5 million dollars earmarked for this ridiculous name change: DeSantis (if he signs the bill) and the Florida GOP can now officially shut up about Florida DOGE and any wasting of money. The cult and its hypocrisy are strong here in the Sunshine State.

There's also legislation moving forward to eliminate property tax.
Florida gets away with this because of their ridiculous tourist tax (upwards of 20% when you combine state and local levies). At some point they're going to milk that cow until all it's teats fall off and that will cause the house of cards to collapse. I just don't see how you can eliminate property taxes without an adequate replacement.

We'll see, but FL has been milking tourism for many decades now with year-over-year growth.

Well, it's not wholesale, it's for homesteads only (FL-speak owner occupied houses) - e.g. snowbirds would have to establish their home as a homestead in order to qualify. All rental properties and businesses would continue to pay property taxes. Also property taxes for education are excluded from the bill.

The numbers appear to be there. Some areas may need a slight increase in sales tax to cover the loss in homestead taxes but this wasn't pulled from thin air.
