Link: 2026 Transfer Portal

Based on that, it looks like we have no idea what we are doing with the portal. A lot going out, but not much coming in. I hope that means we're confident in what we have in place, because that report is really an ugly look in "modern" college football.
If I understand Jess's breakdown correctly, we're at 107/105 total spots (and he estimates we need 7 more from the portal to meet needs). How do we keep adding more and stay under the total number without losing some more, too?

I could be missing something, but that sounds like we'll have a gap between who we lose vs. who we pick up this cycle no matter how we close

Hard to say for sure at this juncture but I think Jess's thread does a pretty good job of giving context....

The important thing to know here is that there were not, to my knowledge actual roster limits before. Dabo made a huge fuss about this rule when it was implemented. I think they were travel roster limits, but not total roster limits. So you could have tons of walk ons. There's also a clause that allows for players to be grandfathered in.

But anyway, now the new limit actually increased from 85 to 105 scholarship players. So you can dramatically increase the quality of your players, but not the quantity! That's the distinction here, if you look at Jess's list it's heavily littered with walk-ons that most people here have never heard of or discussed, who are very unlikely to ever play or contribute for the most part.

Anyway, here's the clause if you want to read it:
"In order to transition to the new roster limits, schools will “designate” student-athletes who were either removed or would have been removed from the school’s roster due to the implementation of roster limits. Those student-athletes will not count against the roster limits at any school for the remainder of their eligibility. “Designated student-athletes” are those student-athletes who were either 1) on the school’s athletic rosters as of April 7, 2025 for the 2024-25 academic year or 2) an incoming Division 1 athlete who was recruited or promised by a school a roster spot before April 7, 2025 for the 2025-26 academic year. A school’s ability to exceed the roster limit with respect to designated student-athletes remains the discretion of the school."

Long story short, it sounds like they can exceed the limits by grandfathering in the walk-ons and now they can add the players that are needed with plenty of headroom. In fact it sounds beneficial to push beyond this and designate as many walk-ons as possible.

The fact that the number is so close to 105 with so many walk-ons listed shows they actually have tons of available scholarships. I said earlier that they should have around 30 available scholarship slots and I just counted over 30 walk-ons...

If the Miami "buy out" of the Duke QBs contract and their offer for him to come to Miami, are true then CFP is even further down the wrong path than I thought....$10M buy out, country club living, adidas deal, a full ride and NIL for his sister ( soccer player)..
