Alabama: Could you even imagine Curt Cignetti at Alabama?

Not to be a downer, but if what we see on the field next season isn't significantly better than what we just had, then maybe the boosters should break the bank and throw an offer at him. Why not? It doesn't hurt to at least inquire.

If Alabama is, as repeatedly stated in this thread, less financially backed than Indiana, how would it be possible to far outspend Indiana on the $12+ million annually that Cignetti is making there?

I’m guessing that it is not possible, and that a guy like Cignetti is not interested anyway. Both of his kids are doctors, his family has generational money, and he has shown that he can win nattys at Indiana while sticking it to all the schools that shunned him. And he has complete authority to run that program anyway he pleases.

Want to know the way to dominate a sport with less money needed? Probably gonna tick some people off, but the way to do that is to pull money from football and overspend on basketball. A 13 man roster and five man coaching staff is way, way cheaper to top level spend on.

Mal Moore once said in an interview that Nick Saban was the best investment the University of Alabama ever made. Think of the implication, and it makes perfect sense. When you're winning, the fans are buying more gear, making more donations, attending more games, and so on.

Sadly, we've reached an era where "you get what you pay for" in college football, and that applies to both the staff and the players.

Success breeds success. Once we started winning under CNS, look at what happened to recruiting. We kept getting top-level players at a rate that hadn't been seen in years.

I think those Saban-like days still apply in most ways. Lots of teams have big budgets but only a few of those big budget teams with great coaches succeed at a very high rate.

Hell, it might even be better now: Indiana just won a national championship with a pretty small budget. They’ll have a big budget going forward, but made two straight CFPs and won a natty with a below average budget in their own conference!

Is there a team pre-NIL that won it all with below average financial resources like they just did?

Lets see, quit acting like car dealerships are the only people that have money. Business people have loads of cash, except it is not in the form of our current NIL program has a clue about. Listen, I am a simple guy, but I run 4 Hedge Funds. I am not even a graduate of Bama, but I can trace my family back to 1902 being graduates. I have a LOGE box, but when I mention 20m will be coming from CITI Bank in Dubai, these rednecks act like I am a terrorist.
You sound like Ellis…”Hans…Bubbe…”

That's out of my conversation capacity. I have no idea what you and the university have or haven't "discussed".
Let's put it in simple terms, we can't even close out the 2027 QB because of lack of funds. Mark my words, Alabama Football is now an afterthought. We have 10 -15 other programs that are millions of miles ahead of us in NIL. Utah, Indiana, South Florida, SMU, Texas Tech and now LSU. These are just the lesser programs. OSU, Michigan, Oregon, Miami, Texas, TAM, etc.

It's a sad state of affairs. Doug and Tripp are the biggest goofballs on the planet. It kind of reminds me of post Bryant growing up. Until we get a "Saban" business guy who understands how the world works now, it's not looking good for the home team.

I read a while back that Indiana has the largest living alumni base in the country.

Mal Moore once said in an interview that Nick Saban was the best investment the University of Alabama ever made.

Not to be "that guy", but I think that was Robert Witt who said that.

The problem, though, is that world doesn't exist any longer such as it did 20 years ago.

Saban won 3 titles in 4 years using the (now outlawed) tactic of oversigning, his incredible abilities at assessing talent, his setting in place a tiny bit of continuity with the coaching staff, and using his incredible depth at several positions to navigate inevitable injuries and so his freshmen on the line arrived as fully developed juniors with some playing time in important games. The blowout wins - go back and watch and Saban would basically start switching out linemen first when the lead was 28 points in the second half and then switch out by adding a player or two at a time until every player on the field was a 2nd and sometimes 3rd string.

Even setting aside oversigning, our depth died in 2013, and it was never that good again.

It is literally impossible in the "four games without a redshirt", "we can buy your player" and transfer portal era to use the Saban TACTICS. And while tactics (recruiting here) don't in and of themselves win ballgames, they're still a necessity.

If Jalen Hurts lost his starting position TODAY like he did in the last game of 2017, he'd be in the portal before the national championship parade was held.
