24 team CFP proposal by Big Ten Conf

So all the top programs who we know before the season will make the playoff would play a whole regular season just to determine home field advantage for the playoff. Not much to get excited about.

Some months ago, only partially tongue-in-cheek, I suggested a 128 team playoff.

Nine regular season games followed by a playoff needing 7 rounds. A maximum of 16 games. Same as today’s max (12 reg season, 1 CCG, and 3 playoff games).

I thought it was using satire to illustrate absurdity.

Turns out, it might be prescient — kind of like the movie Network.

Dang.....24 teams. All about revenue generation

I guess sin the Big 10 has won the last three NCs, they feel like they have more clout that anyone else.

If this did happen, I see absolutely no reason to keep a nine-game SEC Schedule...

Basically what we already have...😎

Broadcast wise this is impossible. They would have to split the playoff across multiple broadcasters and games would have to be on at the same time. I do not see broadcasters ponying up the necessary money to get in on this and not be the only game on.

What's hilarious is - remember all the whining on one side about teams allegedly snubbed in the four-team and on the other side the pro-Four Team folks pointing out we never could get MORE than 2 good games at most in a playoff?

In 2024, we had exactly THREE good games in the playoff: Texas-Ariz St, Texas-Ohio St, and Notre Dame-Penn St. Yes, we added EIGHT TEAMS and added all of ONE GOOD GAME.

In 2025, we had FIVE good games, Ole Miss vs UGA and the 4 games with Miami in them. And one of those was a horrid 10-3 snooze-fest when Miami beat the Aggies, so it was close but it wasn't really a good game, either.

Soon we'll have a year where two first-round games are two of the best ever and the others are all trash.

And couldn't Indiana simply have played Georgia to determine the national champion this past year?

The B1G wants expansion to 24 for only one reason: the conference is historically “top heavy”. The past two years it was tOSU & Indiana Oregon . The previous years tOSU & Indiana, Oregon and Penn State. They know that 12 or 16 will always favor the SEC getting at least four and in most cases five teams based on overall conference strength. A 24 benefits them in getting a fifth team in each year.

But the bottom line to all this is simply about “more games”. It isn’t about “fairness or opportunity”. They really don’t care about the quality of the product. It’s more games to sell to the network, and more money for the conferences.
