The problem is the economic realities that creates.
Let's break this down, the SEC has 16 teams. If you add 8 more without any new contract (check up on how well that 9th game worked out, it was below a pro-rated increase) you are basically taking a giant pie and trying to cut out a lot more slices. Remember, the SEC is making about double what the ACC makes, which gives you an idea of the average value of an ACC team.
FSU is the best football brand there, no question, but you are already in the state of Florida and they are squeezed between Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. Enough for a pro-rated increase? Hopefully?
Clemson was the second most popular program in the unimportant state of South Carolina for quite some time, that's changed but they are fading hard. No pro-rated increase there, at best you hope to not lose money.
Georgia Tech. Straight up lose money, not even close.
UNC, the home run addition. You would gain money there, huge basketball ratings, king of a big state, actually show up for football games.
Duke, lesser in all of those areas. Best case scenario SEC teams don't take a pay cut, but due to abysmal football showings pay cut is likely.
Louisville, same as Duke basically except they're also redundant with Kentucky. Lose money.
UVA, sneaky good addition due to adding a big state, most popular program in the state, good athletic department. Slight increase likely.
8: All vary from money losers to big money losers
That's without really taking into the account redundancies you create. Virginia would become far less valuable if you add VT (the ACC originally tried to get away with adding Virginia without VT but they cried like a baby and got in), UNC becomes less valuable if you add Duke, NC State's already modest value tanks if you make them your second or third NC school. I've looked it over before, it just doesn't work.
So... basically half of those cost you money to add. And with the way ESPN played hardball on the 9th game, you realistically could see a pay cut in revenue per team even with four cherry picked additions.
