Re: If reports on Saban hold true, is it Johnson or Grobe (or someone else)

My vote is for this man. He can flatout coach both sides of the ball. It is a matter of record. "I know son, the numbers don't lie." Foghorn Leghorn :BigA:
Anyone who quotes Foghorn Leghorn is OK in my book.

I think we talk to Schiano and Kragthorpe... not sure about how far things may go on either front. On the NFL front, there's the possibility of Gruden and one of the top-flight coordinators in the League. Would lean toward Kragthorpe... but truthfully, many names have been thrown around, but none of them with enough regularity to say "he's our #2 guy."

BTW, still do hear much about Johnson except from the fans... sorry dabaxter and Irishman. However, I am still hearing Chan Gailey's name at least once or twice a day.

How could the administration pick Kragthorpe? He is far from a "proven" HC. Not saying that Steve is a bad coach, just that he would not represent a step forward for the program for quite a few years. He would be another "project"...

Living down in Deep South Florida I see the fans having a hard time excepting Saban. The blogs down here are 70 percent he leave and 30 percent he stay. I think the next game for Miami will turn this whole story around. Rodriquez turn down a Gold Mine for a Coal Mine and Saban is headed to the unemployment line after next season if he stays. The Sun Sentinel has some players concerned about his ability to get the right people signed. Drew Brees was close to a deal and the owner opted for Daute Culpepper. Very unhappy fans in South Florida. Saban isn't fooling anyone especially the fans in Miami. :BigA:

I think I can handle the rekindled Spurrier rumors better than I can handle the mention of Chan Gailey

As this coaching search goes on I get the feeling that even if we offer Grobe or Johnson they won't come. With Saban's outcry of "I will not be the head coach at Alabama" it almost kind of puts icing on the cake (from a public perspective) that the coaching job at Alabama has all but become a public Joke and everybody's staying tuned to see who will turn down Bama next.

We don't need a "proven" head coach to win here. Heck, I'd say a good assistant coach could win here. Carroll was unproven at USC and lackluster in the NFL. Weis was just an OC. Rodriguez was "proven" at the DII level before he came to WVU. Now, Miami just hired that Shannon dude, who was just a DC for them and a linebacker back in the late 80s for the same team.

I'm just saying I think "proven" is more of something that a coach needs to build on his own and frankly, there aren't a lot of "proven" coaches out there that already have national championship rings that we can hire.

NYBF... like I mentioned, I am not certain who will be our #2 at this point. I'm of the opinion that certain ones I mentioned (and a few I didn't) probably hold the backup spot... but none have emerged as a clear-cut leader. However, I might add that regardless of Saban's situation, we probably would not be far from having a #2 on the way to Tuscaloosa. In fact, IMO, I would say we've got the #2 choice all but signed at this point... I believe all that seal the deal would be NS saying a final "no" to UA.

Personally, I would not be happy with either Johnson (offense) or Grobe (one-season wonder.) The Nutt silliness is not even worth commenting on. If I had to make a choice, I like Gary Patterson. He has had sustained success at a mid-major school and would be a very nice fit for Alabama. Just my .02.

Oh, and by the way, I would take Patterson over Saban, too.

Agreed...I also like Johnson and Neuheisel. I'm very concerned about Grobe becoming our HC.
